Subject: Albertson's Center Renovation 3101 -3121 Newport Blvd., Newport Beach
Dear Planning Commission:
You have probably heard from many of the residents in the area of the Albertson's
planned renovation. However, we are very concerned by the increased traffic being
proposed for 30th Street.
30th Street is narrow with vehicles parked on both sides on a daily basis. Regular -sized
vehicles may squeeze through, but trucks and semi - trucks that service the Albertson's
Supermarket have a difficult time navigating through this street.
There are families with small children who reside and play on 30th Street. Many more
beachgoers walk on 30th Street by its accessibility to shops, restaurants, supermarkets,
public parking and the beach.
On the same shopping center is a bicycle shop that is quite busy renting their equipment.
Many visitors and/or patrons take practice rides in the back of the shopping center where
deliveries occur. Why make it more dangerous for the truck drivers, residents, patrons
and the public?
A suggestion is to direct these large vehicles to enter and exit on 32nd Street which is
wider and has at least two lanes in each direction and parking lanes both ways. 32nd
Street would allow for better visibility and maneuverability.
It would seem that the City of Newport Beach would not want to open itself to increased
liability by allowing such a heavier traffic flow on a small and narrow street. The city
needs to really take a step back and evaluate the decision to allow the truck traffic on
30th Street. Does it have to take one mishap, or worst yet, a death of a pedestrian or a
young child?
I hope that the Planning Commission would consider a better and safer alternative for the
community.
Sincerely,
Richard and Irena A. Glassman
