PLANNING COMMISSION STAFF REPORT
Agenda Item No. 4
February 8, 2007
TO: PLANNING COMMISSION
FROM: Daniel Campagnolo, GIS Analyst, Planning Department

SUBJECT: Planning Department Website
ISSUE:
Review of recent changes to the Planning Department website and the online Planning
Case Log.
DISCUSSION:
Recently, you may have noticed some changes made to the Planning Department's
website. The most obvious difference is the appearance, which now is consistent with
the overall design scheme of the City's home page. Website visitors will have a better
sense that the Planning Department is associated with the rest of the city, rather than
an off -site location. Secondly, the organizational structure is more user - friendly,
especially for frequently accessed content, such as Forms and Applications, General
Plan and the Zoning Code.
One particular feature I would like to mention are the changes we have made to the
Planning Case Log. In our efforts to improve data management practices and reduce
data -entry redundancy, the Planning Case Log is now displaying `real -time' information
directly from Permits Plus (City's permit tracking software). The following are some the
benefits for the new online Planning Case Log:
• Planning Case information is updated in 'real time'
• Reduce data entry redundancy
• Planning Cases are automatically removed after appeal period.
• Identify inactive projects by last status entry
• Project milestones, descriptions and comments are being stored in a database
for future reference, analysis, etc.

The new Planning Case Log can be accessed from the Planning Department's home
page (www. city.newport - beach.ca.us /planning). Currently, the data is sorted by the
Planning Activity(PA) number. I am working with MIS on expanding the functionality to
include filters for all the different types of approvals i.e. Variance, Modification, Use
Permit so they can be viewed separately. I will keep you informed of future
enhancements to the Planning Case Log, as well as any other improvements that are
assisting Staff with project- review.
