AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH APPROVING AN AMENDMENT TO
TITLE 20 OF THE NEWPORT BEACH MUNICIPAL CODE
SO AS TO REVISE STANDARDS FOR ILLUMINATED
SIGNS
• WHEREAS, Section 20.06.070 (A -2) of Chapter 20.72 of Title 20 of the Newport Beach
Municipal Code currently sets the maximum brightness of illuminated signs with the City; and
WHEREAS, the current standard allows for signs which are excessively bright; and
WHEREAS, a new standard is necessary to allow readable illuminated signs which do not
interfere with the use and enjoyment of adjacent properties or create any public safety hazards; and
WHEREAS, on March 21, 1996, the Planning Commission of the City of Newport Beach
held public hearings regarding AmendmentNo. 841 and recommended approval of said amendment;
and
WHEREAS, on April 22, 1996, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach held a public
hearing regarding Amendment No. 841; and
• WHEREAS, the public was duly noticed of the public hearings; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, it has been determined
that the proposed amendment is categorically exempt under Class 5, minor alterations in land use
limitations.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS
SECTION 1: Section 20.06.070 (A -2) of Chapter 20.06 of Title 20 of the Newport Beach
Municipal Code of the Newport Beach Municipal Code to read as follows:
2. ILLUMINATED SIGNS. Unless otherwise prohibited by this Chapter, signs may be
illuminated provided such illumination does not interfere with the use and enjoyment of
• adjacent properties or create any public safety hazards. Exterior light sources shall be
shielded from view and directed away from adjacent properties. The Planning Director may
order the dimming of any illumination found to be excessively bright, based on the following
guidelines:

SECTION 2: The Mayor shall sign and the City Clerk shall attest to the passage of this
Ordinance. This Ordinance shall be published once in the official newspaper of the City, and the
same shall become effective thirty (30) days after the date of its adoption.
This Ordinance was introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Newport Beach held on April 8, 1996, and adopted on the 22nd day of April 1996, by the following
• vote, to wit:
