RESOLUTION NO, 7Ls
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING,THE DESIGNATION OF
ORANGE COUNTY AS A STANDARD METROPOLITAN AREA
WHEREAS, the federal government designates important
statistical areas across America as Standard Metropolitan Areas;
and
WHEREAS, Orange County, California, since 1949, has been
lumped into the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, now called the "Los
Angeles -Long Beach Standard Metropolitan Area ", with no mention of
Orange County in its title; and
WHEREAS, if Orange County is separated from Los Angeles
County and designated a separate metropolitan area, the Orange
County, California, Standard Metropolitan Area would probably be
the 2.6th largest of the 204 big metropolitan areas of.the nation;
and
WHEREAS, fast - growing Orange County, as long as it is
lumped into the so- called "Los Angeles -Long Beach" area, is lost
to the notice of researchers, industrialists, marketers, investors
and federal and state agencies who study the federal government's
list of metropolitan areas for economic ratings; and
WHEREAS, statistics on Orange County, the fastest growing
major county in the nation, are needed in comparison to other metro-
politan areas in order to attract industry and investment and to aid
in future planning and development by local, state and federal
agencies; and
WHEREAS, population estimates published by Orange County
Newsmagazine of Life, Business & Industry show that Los Angeles
County, on its own, is now rapidly moving ahead of the 6- County
Chicago Standard Metropolitan Area; and
WHEREAS, Orange County can now be separated from Los
Angeles County for statistical purposes without affecting the stand-
ing of the Los Angeles Area as "Second Largest Market in the United
States ", ahead of the Chicago Area and second only to the'New York
Area;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the members of
the City Council of the City of Newport Beach in Orange County,
California, respectfully request the Committee on Standard Metro -
politan Areas, Bureau of the Budget, Executive Office of the Presi-
dent, Washington, D. Co, to designate Orange County, California,
as a Standard Metropolitan Area; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we request the President of
the United States, the Director of the Bureau of the Budget, the
Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of
Health,. Education and Welfare, and the heads of other federal
agencies concerned, members of the Senate and House of Represent-
atives, the Governor of the State of California, public officials
and civic leaders of both Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and the
executives of Sales Management Magazine and other publications to
join in this recommendation, which will secure for Orange County
the long overdue recognition to which it is entitled.
