A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING CONCERN ABOUT THE
SHORTAGE OF SCHOOL CLASSROOMS AND URGING VOTER
APPROVAL OF SCHOOL BONDS AT THE ELECTION
FEBRUARY 11, 1969
WHEREAS, there is a serious shortage of classrooms in
the Newport -Mesa School District presently requiring over 1300
children to receive less than a full day's education; and
WHEREAS, if not remedied promptly, this shortage will
become even more critical as enrollment increases and more
students are forced onto double sessions; and
WHEREAS, the City Council believes that a first class
local school system is essential to the social and economic
well being of the community; and
WHEREAS, the City Council is concerned that unless the
new facilities are provided it will be impossible for the district
to maintain the level of educational quality that the community
needs and has enjoyed in the past; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the school district
has scheduled a bond election for February 11, 1969, to provide
funds for a building program designed to meet the most urgent
classroom needs, eliminate double sessions by next fall, and
achieve more efficient use of existing facilities and equipment;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach urges the voters of Newport Beach
to consider the needs of the local school system, to consider
the social and economic implications for the community if needed
classrooms are not provided, and to vote in favor of the bond
issue at the election February 11, 1969.
ADOPTED this 14th day of January , 1969.
