RESOLUTION NO. 7975
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE
CONSTRUCTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALI-
FORNIA, IRVINE, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE ON-
CAMPUS TEACHING HOSPITAL
WHEREAS, at the November 1972 General Election the
people of Orange County overwhelmingly approved Proposition 2
for Health Sciences Facilities, a construction Bond Act which
provides $155.9 million to be used for Health Sciences Capital
Outlay needs of the University of California; and
WHEREAS, it was clearly understood by the people of
Orange County that funds from the Bond Act would be used to
provide urgently needed new facilities of the School of Medicine
at the Irvine campus including an on- campus teaching hospital;
and
WHEREAS, the people of Orange County supported the
Bond Act on this basis; and
WHEREAS, a teaching hospital located on the Irvine
campus will much better serve the needs of the Medical School
and thereby the interests of the people of Orange County and
the State of California; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of Hoag Hospital have
taken a position favoring the UCI School of Medicine On- campus
Teaching Hospital provided the total number of hospital beds
in Orange County will not be increased; and
WHEREAS, representatives of the University of California,
Irvine, have indicated that the proposed School of Medicine On-
campus Hospital will not have more than 200 beds and have further
given assurances that 200 beds will be removed from the Orange
County Medical Center on or before the Teaching Hospital is
occupied;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach supports the construction of the
University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine On- campus
Teaching Hospital so long as the total number of hospital beds
in Orange County is not increased thereby.
