RESOLUTION NO. 8132
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING THE DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS
OF THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES TO REFRAIN FROM
TAKING A POSITION ON BALLOT MEASURES OF STATEWIDE
INTEREST PRIOR TO A VOTE OF ALL MEMBER CITIES
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the League of Cali-
fornia Cities has in certain instances taken a public position on
controversial ballot measures of vital statewide interest without
first polling the member cities; and
WHEREAS, the position taken by the Board of Directors
in these matters does not always accurately reflect the true
opinion of all or even a majority of the League membership; and
WHEREAS, the Board's action has resulted in League-
endorsed political campaign statements appearing on the radio,
television, and in the news media; and
WHEREAS, in order to avoid possible bias and prejudice,
the League's policy positions on ballot measures of statewide in-
terest should remain non - partisan until such time as a true expres-
sion is obtained from all the member cities in General Assembly or
by a polling of the member cities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach that the Directors and Officers of the
League of California Cities are hereby requested to refrain from
expressing a position on ballot measures of statewide concern until
such time as all League member cities have had the opportunity to
voice their opinions on such issues;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the
League of California Cities make this a part of its official policy;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby
instructed to send a copy of this Resolution to each member city
in the Orange County Division of the League of California Cities,
and to each member of the Board of Directors of the League of
California Cities;
