A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH URGING THE ORANGE
COUNTY TRANSIT DISTRICT TO PROVIDE
LOCALIZED PASSENGER SERVICE IN CONJUNCTION
WITH A RAPID OR MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM, AND
ENCOURAGING OTHER CITIES IN ORANGE COUNTY
TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LOCALIZED
TRANSIT SERVICE
WHEREAS, the City Council has reviewed a report for
the operation of a localized bus service, sometimes referred
to as "mini -bus" or "dial -a- ride" systems, in Newport Beach;
and
WHEREAS, in addition the City Council has reviewed
the status of the studies being conducted by the Orange County
Transit District pertaining to a mass transit system in Orange
County; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that a
rapid or mass transit system in Orange County, excepting the
corridor along MacArthur Boulevard from Bonita Canyon to
Pacific Coast Highway, supported by an effective localized
passenger collection service would be a desirable means to
decrease the use of and dependency on the automobile; and
WHEREAS, a localized mini -bus operation must be
coordinated with the operations of the OCTD;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach hereby urges the Orange County
Transit District to establish a localized passenger collection
service to augment an intercity rapid or mass transit system
in Orange County;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the other cities in Orange
County be encouraged to support the establishment of a localized
Transit Service.
