RESOLUTION NO. 96- 32
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT
BEACH REQUESTING THAT THE SADDLEBACK COLLEGE STUDENT
GOVERNMENTS, FACULTY AND DEANS REINSTATE THE PLEDGE OF
ALLEGIANCE AS AN AGENDIZED ITEM FOR THEIR PUBLIC MEETINGS
WHEREAS, the Presidents' Council, the Faculty Association, the Academic
Senate, and the Associated Student Government of Saddleback College are
comprised of duly - elected officials whose duty includes the budgeting and spending of
public funds; and
WHEREAS, all four duly - elected bodies have actively chosen to remove the
Pledge of Allegiance from meetings open to the public, and stated that their reasons
are the "issues of control by outsiders ", "time (that the Pledge takes) is better spent by
conducting business ", and "the Pledge is not reflective of society, and that it alienates
foreign exchange students, minorities and those who don't believe in God "; and
WHEREAS, in doing so, these publicly- funded bodies of Saddleback College
have failed to protect the rights of patriotic citizens to pledge their allegiance to the
ideals represented by the Flag of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, this City Council believes it is un- American to sit idly by while the
right of our citizens to exercise their patriotism at public meetings is being sabotaged;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach, as every other City in the great State of
California, actively agendizes the Pledge of Allegiance for every public meeting; and
WHEREAS, the Flag of the United States of America, which represents the Bill
of Rights and our Constitution, serves to guide this City Council in its decisions,
• provides a pathway to achieve these very ideals, and allows us to pay homage and
respect to those that have sacrificed for well over 200 years to give us this right.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Newport Beach does hereby request that the Saddleback College Student
Governments, Faculty, and Deans reinstate the Pledge of Allegiance as an agendized
item for every public meeting of elected bodies in respect for the rights of all, and to
provide guidance to those elected bodies in their decision - making process.
