A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE
PROPOSED EXPANSION OF THE NEWPORT HARBOR ART
MUSEUM AND CONDITIONALLY SUPPORTING RELOCATION
OF THE NEWPORT CENTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO
ACCOMMODATE THE EXPANSION
WHEREAS, the Newport Harbor Art Museum has expressed its
desire to remain in Newport Beach; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Newport Harbor Art
Museum believes the current facility must be expanded if they are
to host major exhibitions; and
WHEREAS, the architect retained by the Board of Trustees
to develop a program for expansion has presented a proposed plan
to the Newport Beach City Council; and
WHEREAS, the plan for expansion proposed by the
architect contemplates the construction of a new art museum and
community center on the site currently occupied by the Newport
Center Branch Library with the Newport Center Branch Library
moving into the structure currently occupied by the Art Museum;
and
WHEREAS, the estimated cost for the conversion of the
Museum to accommodate the Newport Center Branch Library is
$1,558,000 and the preliminary 1986 -87 City of Newport Beach
Budget contains no funds for such a conversion; and
WHEREAS, the Library Board of Trustees have
conditionally approved the concept of relocating the Newport
Center Branch Library if adequate parking is provided and if
implementation of the plan does not impair the ability of the

Library Board to accomplish its top priority goals of automation
and refurbishment for all library branches.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Newport
Beach hereby resolves as follows:
1. The City Council of the City of Newport Beach
hereby supports the proposed expansion of the Newport Harbor Art
Museum and encourages those working towards the expansion to
continue their efforts; and
2. The City Council approves the concept of relocating
the Newport Center Branch Library into the facility currently
occupied by the Newport Harbor Art Museum so long as the
relocation, and attendant costs, do not have the effect of
impairing the ability of the Library Board to accomplish its
primary goals of automating and refurbishing all branch
libraries.
