A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING WATER LEGISLATION.
• WHEREAS, Southern California depends on water from the
California State Water Project to meet more than one -third (1/3)
of its needs; and
WHEREAS, the State Water Project's importance as a source
of water for Southern California will continue to increase; and
WHEREAS, existing facilities of the State Water Project,
including the interior waterways of the Sacramento -San Joaquin
Delta are inadequate to provide Southern California with the
amount of water for which it has contracted and which it needs;
and
WHEREAS, the present method of moving water from the
north of the Delta to the beginning of the Governor Edmund G.
Brown California Aqueduct on the south of the Delta is both
inefficient and damaging to fish and wildlife; and
WHEREAS, Assemblyman Jim Costa and Senator Ruben Ayala
have introduced bills, the centerpieces of which are AB 1710 and
SB 32 that address the many concerns of the Delta including fish,
wildlife, levee maintenance, recreation, water quality, and water
for export to more than sixteen (16) million Californians.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council does
hereby resolve as follows:
1. The City Council of the City of Newport Beach
supports AB 1710, SB 32 and other related bills as reasonable,
necessary legislation to address the manifold issues associated
with the Sacramento -San Joaquin Delta and the improvement of
facilities of the State Water Project.
2. A copy of this Resolution is to be forwarded to
Assemblyman Jim Costa, Senator Ruben Ayala and other appropriate
elected officials.
