CITY COUNCIL AGENDA
ITEM NO. 4
TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Public Works Department
SUBJECT: RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING INSTALLATION OF A STOP SIGN ON 8T"
STREET AT WEST BAY AVENUE
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a resolution requiring all traffic on 8`h Street to stop at West Bay Avenue.
DISCUSSION:
Residents at the corner of 81h Street and West Bay Avenue have expressed concerns
regarding traffic speeds and safety at this location. This is an unusual intersection as
Bay Avenue is a two -way street west of 81h Street, and is a one -way westbound street
east of the intersection. Their concerns include traffic not yielding at the intersection,
and vehicles driving the wrong way on the one -way segment of Bay Avenue east of 81h
Street. There is presently a YIELD sign and pavement message on 81 Street at the
intersection with West Bay Avenue.
The residents' concerns were discussed at the Traffic Affairs Committee (TAC) meeting
on March 10, 1999. The TAC voted to recommend the replacement of the existing
YIELD sign on 81h Street with a STOP sign. This should provide clearer direction to the
drivers and improve the safety of this location.
