Dear Mayor Noyes and Council Members:
This year the Pacific Coast Triathlon, to be held on July 23, 2000, at Crystal Cove
State Park, will be the USAT National Championships. Athletes both professional
and amateur age - groups are expected to compete for national titles and a $5000
prize purse. Mazda Motors will be this years' title sponsor, having committed
$50,000 to the race. Other major committed sponsors include Mission Hospital,
The Daily Pilot, The Irvine Co., KPMG, Speedo, Charles Schwab and Taormia
Industries for an estimated $100,000 of sponsorship receipts. We have contracted
with OLN, a cable sports producer, to broadcast the race on national Tv prime
time. The prime importance to the race is our community. Over the last two years
since the inception of the race, we have donated over $52,000 to youth oriented
causes including over $25k to our two local high school foundations. Our
prospective budget calls for a minimum of $30,000 being given through our
affiliation with the Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach/Corona del Mar to the kids in
our area. This race will bring much positive recognition and exposure both to our
sponsors and the Newport Beach community. This race is quickly becoming
known as a "must do" for athletes throughout the U.S.
The organizers and athletes would gratefully appreciate a resolution of the
Newport Beach City Council supporting the Pacific Coast Triathlon — 2000.
Thank you for considering this request.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bob Cu
