Harkless, City Clerk SUBJECT: RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR THE PACIFIC COAST TRIATHLON - 2000 RECOMMENDATION Adopt Resolution No. 2000 -_ supporting the Pacific Coast Triathlon - 2000 and its participants, volunteers and beneficiaries during its 3rd Annual event on July 23, 2000. BACKGROUND Dr. Bob Cuyler, on behalf of the organizers and athletes for the Pacific Coast Triathlon - 2000, submitted a letter dated February 23, 2000 to the Mayor and the City Council requesting a resolution in support of their 3rd Annual event to be held at Crystal Cove State Park on July 23, 2000 (copy attached). Over the last two years since the inception of the race, the committee has donated over $52,000 to youth oriented causes including over $25k to Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar High School foundations. The proposed budget calls for a minimum of $30,000 to be given through their affiliation with the Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach /Corona del Mar to the kids in the area. 6Y �4. rya &a-1 LaVonne M. Harkless, City Clerk Attachment - Draft Resolution Cuyler letter RESOLUTION NO. 2000- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE PACIFIC COAST TRIATHLON - 2000 WHEREAS, the P Annual Pacific Coast Triathlon will be held on July 23, 2000 at Crystal Cove State Park; and WHEREAS, both professional and amateur age groups are expected to compete for national titles and a $5,000 purse; and WHEREAS, Mazda Motors will be the Triathlon's title sponsor, having donated $50,000 to the race; and WHEREAS, other major sponsors include Mission Hospital, The Daily Pilot, The Irvine Company, KPMG, Speedo, Charles Schwab and Taormia Industries for an estimated $100,000 of sponsorship receipts; and WHEREAS, OLN, a cable sports producer, will broadcast the Triathlon on national TV; and WHEREAS, since the inception of the race, the Pacific Coast Triathlon has donated over $52,000 to youth oriented causes, including over $25,000 to Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar High Schools; and WHEREAS, the Pacific Coast Triathlon is quickly becoming known as a "must do" for athletes throughout the U.S. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach offers its full support to the PACIFIC COAST TRIATHLON and its participants, volunteers and beneficiaries during its P Annual event on July 23, 2000. Athletes both professional and amateur age - groups are expected to compete for national titles and a $5000 prize purse. Mazda Motors will be this years' title sponsor, having committed $50,000 to the race. Other major committed sponsors include Mission Hospital, The Daily Pilot, The Irvine Co., KPMG, Speedo, Charles Schwab and Taormia Industries for an estimated $100,000 of sponsorship receipts. We have contracted with OLN, a cable sports producer, to broadcast the race on national Tv prime time. The prime importance to the race is our community. Over the last two years since the inception of the race, we have donated over $52,000 to youth oriented causes including over $25k to our two local high school foundations. Our prospective budget calls for a minimum of $30,000 being given through our affiliation with the Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach/Corona del Mar to the kids in our area. This race will bring much positive recognition and exposure both to our sponsors and the Newport Beach community. This race is quickly becoming known as a "must do" for athletes throughout the U.S. The organizers and athletes would gratefully appreciate a resolution of the Newport Beach City Council supporting the Pacific Coast Triathlon — 2000.
