WHEREAS, the week of October 7 -13 is designated as National Fire Prevention Week;
and
WHEREAS, this week begins with our annual Police and Fire Departments' Public Safety
Day or Sunday, October 7, 2001, where citizens and visitors of Newport Beach can come to learn
more about public safety in our community; and
WHEREAS, in light of recent events involving the possible loss of 311 New York City
Firefighters in the World Trade Center attack; and
WHEREAS. the national fire community is a very small close -knit family of firefighters;
connected by over 200 years of American culture and tradition, they feel this loss as if it were in
our own community; and
WHEREAS, this loss of New York firefighters in a two -hour period is equivalent to a three -
year loss of firefighters in the line of duty in the United States and Canada combined; and
WHEREAS, the communities and citizens of Newport Beach wish to express their sorrow
and gratitude for the firefighters lost in this horrific event; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Newport Beach
does hereby proclaim October 7— 13, as
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
and Sunday, October 7" as a
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND REFLECTION
for all those firefighters who perished in the World Trade Center attack; and
FURTHER, that the City Council of the city of Newport Beach hereby acknowledges the
valiant acts of heroism of those selfless firefighters who gave their lives trying to save others and
expresses deep sympathy and condolences to the families left behind in the wake of this
unspeakable tragedy; and
FURTHER, that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach requests a moment of
silence at noontime on Sunday, October 7" to honor our firefighters' fallen brethren.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of
Newport Beach to be affixed this twenty-fifth day of September, 2001.
