SUBJECT: Approval of City Centennial Celebration Logo
RECOMMENDATION:
The Centennial Committee recommends the approval of two logos for the Centennial
Celebration. One logo will be used as the Centennial corporate logo and the second will be
used for specialty merchandise.
DISCUSSION:
On January 27, 2004 the City Council created the Centennial 2006 Committee to ensure that
the planning and celebrations for the centennial are created and supported by the
community.
One of the first orders of business for the committee has been the solicitation of a logo to be
used for the Centennial and all associated collateral marketing materials and events. The
Committee issued a Request for Proposals to 50 local artists /designers requesting
submission of logo ideas that met the following parameters:
• Develop a logo concept that best communicates the spirit of the Centennial and the City.
• Develop a logo that can be applied in a variety of uses, including stationery,
marketing /advertising, signage, collateral materials, merchandise, vehicles and Internet.
• There are no color limitations but design must work in Black and White as well as color.
(Black and white is essential for print advertisements.)
• Design must work with both large and small sizes.
• The design should work in both screened and line art formats.
• The "identity" of Newport Beach should be evident in the design and should consider
elements key to the City such as: The Pavilion, ferry, boating, the beach, palm trees, etc.
• Using "1906- 2006" within the logo should be considered.
• Must be produced in high quality electronic form. (Illustrator 88 or equivalent)
• The designer will transfer the trademark rights and copyrights of the logo as well as all
associated applications and licensing of the logo to the City of Newport Beach.
• The project is to be done on a Pro Bono basis.

SELECTION
From those submitted, the Centennial Committee selected two logos both created by a local
designer. (See attached) Logo A — designed by Luis A. Alvarado, is recommended to be
the corporate logo for the Centennial appearing on all stationary, marketing materials, event
related materials and most merchandise. It was chosen due to its ability to be easily
reproduced, clean lines, clear reproduction in black and white and smaller format, and it has
the ability to be customized for individual events. For example, if there is an event that takes
place at the Balboa Pavilion, the sail boats can be easily removed from the logo and a
silhouette of the Pavilion could be added. In addition, it is the goal of the Centennial
Committee to ask the many annual special events held locally to adopt the Centennial as
their theme in :2006. In doing so, this logo would be very easy to add to their own marketing
materials.
Logo B — designed by Tom Grogg, is recommended to be used for specialty merchandise
such as T- shirts, pins, hats, coffee mugs, etc... The Committee liked both the colorful design
of this logo and it's more casual feel. Although it is not one that will reproduce well in black
and white or in a smaller format, it does evoke a great feeling about our City. The designer
has also agreed to add "1906- 2006" to the design.
Logo A will appear on any merchandise using Logo B where appropriate in order to maintain
a consistent branding with the Centennial.
It is recommended that the Council approve the selection of Logos A and B for the City's
Centennial Celebration.
