HomeMy WebLinkAbout14 - Gold Sponsorship of OC MarathonCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 14 October 25, 2005 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Office of the City Manager Homer L. Bludau, City Manager 949 - 644 -3000, hbIudau ()city.newaort- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: CITY COUNCIL GOLD ($50,000) SPONSORSHIP OF 2ND ANNUAL OC MARATHON TO BE HELD SUNDAY, JANUARY 8, 2006 ISSUE: Does the City Council want the City to become a $50,000 Gold sponsor for the upcoming OC Marathon event? RECOMMENDATION: The City become a Gold sponsor for the event and approve a budget amendment appropriating $50,000 from unappropriated General Fund reserves into City Council account 010-20-0110-8010. 7T4gX 3 *1iP" Last year's inaugural event had just under 10,000 paid participants, which is hugely impressive for a first year marathon event. This year's event, which will be held Sunday, January 8, 2006, is expected to host up to 15,000 participants. The OC Marathon is put on by a non - profit board, and after expenses, money is provided to the following charities: The Brain Injury Foundation; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Southern Cal. Chapter); Olive Crest of Orange County; Shortstop; the OC Ronald McDonald House; United Cerebral Palsy Association of OC and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana. It is hoped this year's event will generate one million dollars in after - expenses revenue to be shared among these charities. DISCUSSION: The OC Marathon has the potential to become one of the largest marathons on the West Coast within the next five years. It is an ideal name recognition event for Newport Beach since the event starts in Fashion Island, yet most of the event takes place and City Council Gold Sponsorship ff 2nd Annual OC Marathon October 25, 2005 Page 2 finishes in the City of Irvine. Therefore, the negative impacts to Newport Beach are limited to early morning duration. In addition, since the event starts in Newport Beach, non -area participants are more likely to spend the previous night in Newport Beach. Restaurant business from participants and spectators is considerable. City crew support is not heavy and is limited to the first several hours of the event. The event is advertised on OC Marathon brochures as being a Newport Beach event. The City's Gold sponsorship will solidify that relationship. Other OC cities have expressed an interest in hosting the event, due to the growth potential and name recognition associated with the event. A Special Events Permit will be required for this event. FISCAL IMPACT: It is recommended the $50,000 be taken from unappropriated General Fund reserves and be appropriated to City Council account 010 -20- 0110 -8010. Submitted by: Homer L. The marketing and public relations team has a goal to position the OC Marathon as a world class event showcasing the natural beauty and diversity of Orange County, while providing a fast and scenic race to support Orange County Children's Charities. The total number of impressions expected from the comprehensive marketing and publicity campaign is over thirty million! This consists of approximately ten million impressions from public relations and media publicity and over twenty million from the media marketing campaign. These numbers are based on last year, but with current sponsorship agreements and media outlets, we expect to exceed that. The value of these campaigns is well over $300,000.
