HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/3/2013 - Board of Library Trustees (16) 1 NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY To: Board of Library Trustees From: Cynthia Cowell, Library Services Director Re: Report of Library Activities ____________________________________________________________________________________ CYNTHIA COWELL, LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR No fooling, the first of April was a big day here at the Library! On that date, we re-opened to the public after a two-week construction closure. Although we still had “mall walls” up, we could see tremendous progress with the new carpet installed and the staff area mostly open for business. On Tax Day, we opened the completed building to the public. It was so wonderful to see the faces of our customers as they entered the building and saw the staircase for the first time and as they found the new study areas. The children’s area was filled with a story hour and everyone enjoying the new furniture and other enhancements. On the 19th, I attended the 6th Annual Gift of Literacy Fundraising Luncheon at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. I took some personal time off during the month, but I was back in time to prepare for the grand opening celebration to occur at the beginning of May. TIM HETHERTON, LIBRARY SERVICES MGR; TECHNICAL PROCESSING COORD. Circulating iPad Policy Thanks to all the staff that helped shape this policy. The circulating iPad policy was combined with the circulating laptop policy, which will be submitted to the Library Board for approval on May 6th. Staff will be given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the policy before it goes live. Staff will also receive training on circulation procedures for iPads. The launch date for this new service will be determined shortly. Media Suite Policy This policy will also be submitted for Board approval on May 6th. Special thanks in particular to the Media Suite committee: Allen Kesinger, Jeremy Rodriguez, Greg Johnson, and Piers Brown. Staff will be given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the policy before it goes live. Wish List Review The Admin Team reviewed the Wish Lists that our awesome support groups, the Friends of the Library and the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation, use to enhance our resources and services for our patrons. Wish lists will be submitted to the Library Board for approval on May 6th. DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR Branches All locations participated in special programming to commemorate National Library Week which took place from Monday, April 15 – Saturday, April 20. Library Board member Ellie Palk helped present Toddler Storytime at Mariners while Councilmember Nancy Gardner stretched and danced with children and parents at the CDM Songs and Stories Storytime. Bubbles were the theme of the Mariners special program on the 20th while the Ocean Institute hosted a family program at Balboa. Almost 100 ocean enthusiasts came by to learn about California’s tide pools and get the chance to touch and view live sea animals on display. CDM presented a program by Craig Newton that explored the history of American music. 2 Mariners page Dean Ngo tendered his resignation and worked his last day on April 26th. Dean was a real asset to the Mariners team and will be missed. Page recruitment is in progress and Mariners will be assigned two new pages sometime in May. Youth Services The big news at Central was the “unofficial” opening of the Children’s Room expansion on Monday, April 15 to kick off National Library Week. It is, in a word, fantastic! The response from customers (of all ages) has been nothing but positive. Staff is also extremely excited to be presenting storytimes in the new space and sharing the new toys and puzzles available to be used there. There is also once again adequate study space for the parents, tutors, kids, etc. who have sorely lacked this resource in the last couple years of construction. To further enhance the festivities that week, Wild Wonders did a show on Monday and on Wednesday, Library Board member Robyn Grant came by to participate in the Toddler Storytime. Teen Services YAAC did not meet in April because of Spring Break. Another SAT practice test program was held and was well attended. There is also an impressive exhibition of student art from Corona del Mar High School currently on display in the Teen Center at Central. MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR April Fool’s Day April Fool’s Day came to the Library with a serious change in scenery. The full length construction walls were gone and shorter moveable walls had taken their place. These short walls did allow more light to filter into the north side of the building and they did make room for the installation of our missing shelves. The collections in the Popular Library and the Children’s Room were shifted into their new spaces. At 9:00 am, after our 2 week closure we had more customers than usual waiting to come through the front door. Staff spent the next two weeks of April tweaking the arrangement of the collections and anticipating the complete opening of the expansion. Construction Electricians, painters, plumbers and inspectors were now sharing the space with our customers and staff. These trades were also working through the night to get the work completed. They tried to keep the loudest work for the night shift, but it wasn’t always possible. Some customers found it too hard to work in the building, but for the most part people were tolerant since they knew that the end of construction was just around the corner. April continued to be busy with finishing touches and corrections. The 2nd floor entry doors were a challenge for the first few days. The installer was here several times until they closed and locked properly. A couple of issues that are still unresolved are the tie in of the new areas into the current security system and the proper flushing of toilets. Both of these problems should be resolved sometime in May. Hopefully this summer, we will be missing our daily contact with our friends from C.W. Driver. RFID Project The self checkout machines, security gates and circulation software were all installed in April. Staff found the system easy to use and they are excited to have the new system in place. A customer commented to me “it’s magic” and I think they’re right. Literacy The Gift of Literacy fundraising luncheon was held on April 19th at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. The speaker T. Jefferson Parker was pleased to be back in his old neighborhood and he was well received by the audience. The luncheon brought in a net amount of $11,577. 3 Branch Buildings A new countertop was installed in the Men’s Room at the Mariner’s Branch. The original laminate counter was cracked and became a hazard. Exterior lights were also replaced at Mariners to create better illumination in the parking lot. NATALIE BASMACIYAN, ADULT SERVICES COORDINATOR Passport Services The Central Library begins Passport Services on May 6th. The staff involved in the new service completed their training, updated the library’s website to highlight the service and provide information, converted the Training Room into a Passport Services office, and began booking appointments, among other activities. Passport Services are available by appointment Monday- Thursday 10:00 am-3:00pm. What’s Cooking at the Library Event Seventy-two attendees enjoyed an informative lecture about cheese and wine pairings from renowned cheese expert, Pam Thompson, of Trader Joe’s. She explained the cheesemaking processes, as well as described local farms that produce the cheeses. She raffled off door prizes for the attendees as well. Manuscripts Book Discussion The book discussed was The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: A Jewish Family’s Exodus from Old Cairo to the New World, by Lucette Lagnado. Many attendees participated in a lively discussion of the family’s challenges and transitions in beginning a new life in America. Forty- five people attended this NBPL Foundation funded program which was free and open to the public.
