CYNTHIA COWELL, LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR
July was a busy month which started with the traditional Independence Day celebration
throughout the City. I attended the usual round of meetings, stopped in to watch the summer
reading activities, took some leave, and planned the announcement of my retirement, effective
October 5. Other than that last thing, it was, for me, a fairly quiet month, especially given the
furious pace at which we’ve been working for the last three or four years.
TIM HETHERTON, LIBRARY SERVICES MGR; TECHNICAL PROCESSING COORD.
The Courage to Remember
Newport Beach Public Library hosted “The Courage to Remember,” a traveling exhibit,
produced by the Museum of Tolerance, the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center,
from July 8 through July 29 at the Central Library. The opening ceremony for the exhibition
was held on July 8 at 10:00a.m. in the Friends Room at the Central Library. Mayor Keith Curry
introduced the opening of the exhibit which included a special presentation by Jack Pariser, an
84-year-old Laguna Beach resident and Holocaust survivor. Pariser escaped from a Polish jail
at age 13 and hid with his parents and his older sister to survive the Nazi slaughter of his village
in 1942.
The exhibit, which features over 200 compelling photographs, offers unique insight into the
Holocaust. The 40-panel visual narrative traces the history of events in four distinct themes:
Nazi Germany, 1933-1938; Moving Toward the "Final Solution," 1939-1941; Annihilation in
Nazi-occupied Europe, 1941-1945; and Liberation, Building New Lives. “The Courage to
Remember” was first assembled more than 20 years ago as an educational resource
encouraging tolerance, hope, courage and change. To date, more than two million visitors in
75 locations and 16 countries have viewed the exhibit, making it the most widely attended
traveling exhibition on Holocaust education and remembrance.
Librarian I Position
Interviews for the opening at Mariners were held on Thursday, July 18th. Congratulations to
Christine Chapel, who was promoted from part time Library Assistant to full time Librarian I.
City Art Collection
Staff has created a Millennium record for every piece in the City’s art collection. The next step
in the process is to barcode and label each piece.
DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR
Branches
Branch locations have been busy and the focus has been on Summer Reading Program. All
SRP events offered in July were staff created programs and have proved popular with children
and parents. Children’s literature inspired activities ranged from decorating cookies (If You
Give a Mouse a Cookie), to cheese tasting (Geronimo Stilton), to a chance to share a banana
and picture with a much beloved book character, Curious George. Judy Pavlik, full-time Clerk II
2
at Mariners Branch, graciously volunteered to take on the persona of George and visited all four
branch locations donning the costume. The program couldn’t have been done without her.
In personnel news, Christine Chapel, part-time Library Assistant at the Mariners Branch,
interviewed for, and was selected to fill the vacant full-time Librarian position at that branch.
Congratulations to Christine. Christine’s vacant LA position will be filled in the near future.
Youth Services
SRP has been very successful at Central this year. Program attendance is high, with well over
100 participants for each of the July events. The expansion area has been a huge asset this
summer as families have enjoyed using the extra space after storytimes and programs without
feeling crowded or rushed to leave the area.
Teen Services
Mara reported that SRP sign-ups for the teen program are almost double of what they were last
year at this same time. That is great news. PSAT practice test and results programs held in
July were also well attended.
MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR
HVAC Repairs
Western Allied has been working through the Public Works department to complete the update
on the Central Library’s ventilating and air conditioning system. The work will continue through
August.
Branch Buildings
New hardware was installed on the entry doors at the Balboa Branch Library. The old hardware
had been corroded by the salt air and made it difficult to open and close the building.
Literacy
Literacy staff and the Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy Board are working on the plans for the
International Literacy Day celebration. This event will be Thursday, September, 12th at 10:00
am. Both 24 Carrots and Bristol Farms will be donating refreshments for the event.
Circulation
Circulation clerks attended the quarterly training session led by Michael Tran, Senior Clerk.
Topics included consistency in entering customer data, circulation relating to new collections
such as Nooks and IPads, proposed changes to the circulation policy and initiating service
request to the IT department for needed repairs.
NATALIE BASMACIYAN, ADULT SERVICES COORDINATOR
EBook Training
Allen and Rebecca hosted an EBook training class on July 18th for 95 customers. They
reviewed the three downloadable services and the basic steps involved in downloading titles.
New Services
The Webteam spent most of July finalizing policies and procedures for several new services.
Specifically, circulating Nooks, circulating iPads, and the Media Center will be available for
customers to utilize at the beginning of August.
