TIM HETHERTON, ACTING LIBRARY SERVICES DIRECTOR/ LIBRARY SERVICES
MANAGER; TECHNICAL PROCESSING COORDINATOR
September proved to be an eventful month. The Library received a much appreciated $5,000
donation from Mr. and Mrs. Phil and Lynn Butterfield through the Foundation. The Butterfields
donated the funds to be used specifically for the Balboa Branch. The funds will be used to
purchase RFID hardware for the Balboa branch, specifically a self check kiosk.
On the 6th, I had the opportunity to address a packed house at the General Gathering of the
Friends of OASIS. I gave a presentation on the Library’s various services, programs, and
resources to very receptive audience. I gave a similar talk that I call What’s New At The Library
on September 18th to the Newport Beach Newcomer’s Club.
The Annual City-wide Evacuation Drill was held on Tuesday, September 17th. Every building in
the City, including all 4 Library locations, participated. The Library Admin Team worked out an
evacuation plan that accounted for the new Central Library expansion on the second floor that
worked quite well.
On the 23rd, The Library’s Bistro, 24 Carrots, opened for business. The food is great, the menu
is excellent, and the coffee is Kean, which is local coffee artisan Martin Dietrich’s new brand.
Martin Brower, author and former Public Relations Director for the Irvine Company gave a
lecture about the history of the Irvine Ranch as documented in his newly updated book, The
Irvine Ranch: A Time for People on September 24th.
Also in September, the City Information Technology department was able to double Internet
bandwidth at all library locations, which will help satisfy Library customer’s demand for speedy
online access.
DEBBIE WALKER, BRANCH AND YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATOR
Branches
September was a fairly quiet month at all locations. With Summer Reading Program done all
locations geared up for the start of the school year. The Balboa Branch hosted their 10th annual
Talk Like a Pirate Day. As usual this program was well attended and offered fun for all ages. A
storyteller offered pirate tales and songs while pirate crafts and a chance to “walk the plank”
rounded out the festivities.
Youth Services
Meetings for Youth Services staff were held at Central in mid-September. The meetings
provide the opportunity to evaluate SRP, discuss programming for the coming year and share
book and craft ideas with one another.
Katherine Mielke, Marketing Specialist, and Joanna Ransom, full-time Library Assistant from
Mariners, manned a booth at the annual Children’s Book Festival located at Orange Coast
2
College. The event was held on Sunday, September 29 and offered the opportunity for
Katherine and Joanna to talk about Library services, sign customers of all ages up for library
cards and connect with some 400 + festival attendees. The Foundation provided funding for
the booth and prizes were purchased by donations from the Friends of the Library.
Teen Services
The first YAAC meeting of the year was held on September 11. The majority of the new council
members attended so the new year has gotten off to a good start. Mara gave them a tour of
the Media Lab and ideas for projects to accomplish in the coming year were discussed.
MELISSA KELLY, SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR
Bistro 24
The Bistro opened for business on September 30th at 7:00am. City Hall customers arrived
during that first hour to get their morning coffee and snacks. The Bistro has been open every
day since then serving food and coffee to the public. They are getting good reviews from staff.
HVAC Repairs
The repairs and balancing of the system continued throughout the month of September. The
final setup of the new control system will be completed in early October and staff will be trained
on the monitoring software.
Emergency Drill
The Libraries all participated in a City-wide Emergency evacuation drill on September 17th. This
was the first time that we evacuated the building using the 2nd floor entry/exit doors as well as
the first floor exits. Staff worked on a new procedure to enable us to check and make sure that
all staff members were accounted for outside of the building. The drill went smoothly at the
Central Library as well as at the Branches.
Circulation
Interviews for the positions of part-time Library Clerk and part-time Library Page were held in
September. Each position accepted 150 applications for the jobs. Testing was held and staff
interviewed fourteen people for each position. From the two recruitments we will have selected
two candidates to fill the open Clerk positions and three for Page. One of the successful
candidates for Clerk is Leah Duffy, who will be promoted from a Page position. The Human
Resources Department is assisting the finalists through the pre-employment process.
Congratulations to Leah!
Literacy
At the September 10th City Council Meeting, Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy presented the City with
a check for $35,000 to support the Library Literacy program. At the same meeting the Mayor
read a Declare September 12, 2013 to be International Literacy Day in the City of Newport
Beach. The Literacy program participants and supporters celebrate ILD at a brunch at the
Central Library on the morning of 9/12. The program included three inspirational literacy
student speakers as well as Literacy Board President, Jason Brady. It was a well attended and
appreciated event.
