We launched SFD in April, and hosted an author-in-conversation event that month. Additionally, there is a display of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and Articles of Confederation on display on the second floor of Central Library. This month, the theme of democracy will be highlighted for children at Imagination Celebration. All little artists, scribes and scribblers are invited to attend a collage-making event on Saturday, May 19 from 1-3pm at the Crean Mariners Branch Library. This fun-filled annual event encourages families to be creative together and enjoy the arts. The library is hoping to capture some of these collages photographically, so that they might be used concurrently in an exhibition withAexcerptsAfromAliteracyAstudentsA“onAbeingAanA merican…”A “StoriesAfromAanAUndeclaredAWar”AFilmAScreening On Tuesday, May 22, the Newport Beach Public Library, along with the Newport Beach Film Festival willAscreenA“StoriesAfromAanA UndeclaredAWar”. This feature-length documentary is about 150 at-risk students from Long Beach, California, who encouraged by their teacher, Erin Gruwell, and inspired by the writings of teen authors, including Anne Frank, discovered a new way to express themselves and began to care more about history, humanity, and perhaps most importantly, their futures. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with Erin Gruwell, author of The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Ms. Gruwell will be available to sign copies of her book following the film as well. Admission is free and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis, limited by room capacity. Library Staff Visit toAMarkAHilbert’sA rtACollection Arts Commissioner Arlene Greer made arrangements for staff to view the art collection of local resident, Mark Hilbert. Mr. Hilbert has amassed an incredible collection of early to mid-century artworks by well- known artists depicting scenes of California (including Newport Beach) from various points and scenic views. He is interested in loaning some of these works to the City or library for display in 2013. First Concert this Sunday The City Arts Commission will welcome Jerry Mandel and his “Swing the Standards Jazz Band” to Grant Howald Park in Corona del Mar for a performance on Sunday, June 10 from 6- 7:30pm. The next two concerts will take place on July 22 with The Bracken Band – an Irish ensemble at Bob Henry Park; and the English U.K. Beat returns on August 5 to Bonita Canyon Sports Park.
