Park and Tree Divisions
September, 1996 Activities Report
Park Division Activities
1. Staff continued coordinating with the Fire and Marine Department's weed
abatement contractor for the seasonal weed and fire abatement at various
locations within the Parks system.
2. Staff continued coordinating construction projects regarding MacArthur
Boulevard, Bob Henry Park, El Paseo Storm Drain, Castaways Park, Seashore
Drive street end improvements from 51st Street to 55th Street, Manning Tract
Park, the Pacific Coast Highway and Newport Boulevard Bridge /Interchange
Project, A.D.A. Projects, and Hoag Linear Park with the Public Works.
Department. Irvine Terrace Park is presently impacted by both A.D.A. work and
• the El Paseo Storm Drain Project, with storm the drain being installed along the
west side of the Park.

3. The annual turf grass renovation program continued throughout the Parks
system.
4. Final preparations were completed at City athletic fields in preparation for
soccer and football opening day events.
5. The replacement of shrubs and ground covers was completed at various sites
in the Parks system.
6. Staff continued coordinating the annual control of rodents by contract services
at various sites throughout the Parks system. The rodent control is necessary for
public safety at City facilities.
7. Staff continued coordinating between the City tree trimming contractor, West
Coast Arborists and the City median and roadside contractor, California
Landscape Maintenance, for the installation of recycled wood chips in planter
areas located in median and roadside locations.
8. Irrigation and plant replacement were performed by contract in several of the
median and roadside areas.

9. A concrete bench was relocated from West Jetty View Park to Lookout Point
and a wood bench was substituted in its place per the request of Commission.
10. Irrigation and planting was completed by contract in planter areas located on
the north side of City Hall.
Upcoming Activities for October
1. The turf grass renovation program will continue throughout the City.
2. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue City-
wide.
3. Staff and contractors will continue installing recycled wood chips in all planter
areas as needed in City medians and roadsides.
4. Rodent eradication at various sites will continue by contract services.
5. A retaining wall will be installed between private property (Stuff Noodle
Restaurant) and Cliff Drive Park for erosion control. The funding for this project
is through the Capital Improvement Project Fund.
Tree Division Activities
During the month of September, 523 trees were trimmed, 40 trees were planted,
53 trees were root pruned, 45 trees were removed, 8 emergency calls were
responded to regarding trees and 350 tree maintenance requests were received
by the Urban Forester.
1. Tree removals were performed at these various locations during the month:
305 Anade Avenue - One tree removed due to property damage. No
replacement tree planted due to location.
512 Fullerton Avenue - One tree removed due to property damage. No
replacement tree planted due to location.
4827 Dorchester Road - One tree removed due to property damage. One
replacement tree planted.
1124 Highland Avenue - One tree removed due to property damage. No
replacement tree planted due to location.
2041 East Ocean Boulevard - One tree removed due to existing hazard. One
replacement tree planted.
• 1307 Marian Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. One
replacement tree planted.
1500 Anita Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. One replacement
tree planted.
1506 Anita Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. One replacement
tree planted.
1509 Anita Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. One replacement
tree planted.
1518 Anita Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. One replacement
tree planted.
1621 Anita Lane - One tree removed due .to property damage. One replacement

200 North Star Lane - Seventeen trees removed due to property damage.
Seventeen replacement trees planted at Dover Shores Community Association's
expense.
508 Orchid Avenue - One tree removed due to property damage. One
replacement tree planted.
510 Orchid Avenue - One tree removed due to property damage. 'One
replacement tree planted.
600 Aldean Place - One tree removed due to existing hazard. One replacement
tree planted.
601 Aldean Place - Two trees removed due to exiting hazard. Two replacement
trees planted.
2. The City tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, completed
scheduled work within the Corona del Mar and Westcliff areas.
