• COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
DATE: December30, 1996
TO: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission
FROM: Steve Hunt, Senior Recreation Manager
SUBJECT: Recreation Division - Monthly Division Report
Youth Basketball has Exploded 11! - The department has eclipsed all previous participation figures with
over 200 athletes signed up for this year's program. This is the first year that the City has offered a separate
league for girls, and it is an instant success. There are already 40 girls registered and practicing for the
January tip-off. The girl's program is identical to the boy's league in terms of rules and age divisions. City
champions will be named in both leagues, and these winners will all advance to the Orange County
Municipal Athletic Association tournament in mid - March, with a chance to qualify for the Southern
California Municipal Athletic Association tournament later that month.
Adult Softball/Basketball - The Winter Basketball season is set to start January 6, 1997 with 71 teams. This
• is five more teams than last year's Winter season and there is at least six teams on the waiting list. Total
revenue for this season is $36,500. Games will be played at West Newport (4 nights), Ensign School (4
nights) and Lincoln (2 nights).
The Spring Softball registration deadline is January 10, with the league set to start the week of February 3,
1997.
Athletic Fields - Lincoln Field # 1 infield has been skinned of all turf and will be renovated completely with
brickdust. This creates a much better playing surface for both youth and adults.
Although most athletic fields will have down time in December, January and part of February, some soccer
and Bobby Sox practice will be utilizing Bonita Creek, Lincoln and the school field at Eastbluff. Youth
baseball practices will start on all fields in early February.
Newport Aquatic Center - Staff continue to develop a use agreement between the City and the IMUA
Outrigger Club which would allow the club continued use of North Star Beach without adversely affecting
the Newport Aquatic Center and the surrounding neighborhood. Discussions have included the attorney's
office and risk management. Staff hope to have a new agreement in place by the end of January.
Special Event Hot Line - The Community Services Department has established a 24 hour Special Event
information "hot line" number. Starting January 6, the community will be able to call this number (644-
3399 ext. 1055) for specifics on upcoming special events. Brief information on Department and
Community events such as the Easter Egg Hunts, CdM 5K Run, 4th of July Parade, Seafest activities and
Christmas Boat Parade and will be provided on this hot line. Plus general information on lap swimming
and upcoming volleyball tournaments. The phone number will be publicized by The Newport Navigator,
• by press releases and by flyers at each of our information locations.
v
Rent- A- Santa - Santas are home relaxing after a busy season of rent- a - Santa visits. There were 77
visits in all. This equaled last year's total bookings, despite the fact that there was one less week. The
is three Santas on staff did a great job and received a number of compliments. Total revenue for the
program was $2,310.

Contract Classes - The Winter Newport Navigator was received by residents on December 7.
Registrations for the Winter classes will continue until classes begin, January 7, 1997. Holiday art camp
went very well with 17 children attending. The most popular holiday camp was the My Little Pony camp
which sold out by the middle of December. Holiday Tennis Camps were canceled due to lack of
enrollment. A new Youth Ski and Snowboard program is being offered. This program is a five weekend
excursion up to Big Bear. The first date is Jan 11.
New class offerings for the 1997 Spring session are attached. One highlight is the development of an
infant toddler program called "Play on Saturdaysl" that will be held at Bonita Creek Park. Spring
classes will start the week of March 24, 1997.
Park Facility Inspections - If there are additional reports that need to be included, please submit to Steve
Hunt. Staff from both Community Services and General Services are in the process of evaluating this very
important process to make it more efficient.

December 26, 1996
TO:
Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Commission
FROM:
Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager
SUBJECT:
Senior Services Division - Monthly Commission Report
During the holidays, OASIS makes every effort to comfort those who are alone. The
Friends of OASIS sponsored the first event of the season. On Saturday, December 14th,
an annual Christmas party was held from 7 -9 p.m. Opera Pacific, performed that evening
which was a benefit from the Cultural Arts Grant program. Five Crowns kindly donated
dessert for all 400 guests.
OASIS engaged in many charitable giving programs during the holiday season. A
Christmas wish tree, located in the lobby, had children's names and wishes hanging;
seniors chose a child to purchase a gift for. This program was coordinated through Olive
Crest Home for Abused Children.
• Fifteen homebound seniors benefited from gift baskets filled with goodies. OASIS
members donated for the cost of the baskets. Staff were given names of people who are
in need of a special gift.
•
OASIS also held a canned food drive to benefit homeless people. All food collected was
given to SOS for the holiday.
In keeping with the several intergenerational programs at OASIS, the talented Harbor
Day School Handbell Choir entertained during the lunch time hour at the Center on
December 19, performing Christmas melodies.
The annual Christmas lunch served 200 participants on Friday, December 20. Staff and
volunteers served the meal; Harbor Day School again assisted by providing hand
decorated place mats. Bonnie Mohr, a professional harpist, provided the entertainment,
as well as Ensign's Choir.
An annual New Year's Eve Party was held and hosted by the Friends of OASIS. Dinner
and entertainment were provided for 150 people. Dancing to the OASIS band was, as
always, a wonderful experience for the participants.
The transportation program statistics indicate that there has been a substantial increase in
one -way trips. The third vehicle provided by the Hoag Community Partnership Grant has
enabled us to increase our rides to medical appointments and grocery shopping. As you
know, the need for transportation has increased so greatly in the last 2 to 3 years. The
residents of this City are very fortunate to have access to this service.
