HomeMy WebLinkAbout04 - Street Tree Designation - 16th Street east of Dover Drive•
Agenda Item No. 4
January 7,1997
To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission
From: General Services Director
Subject: Street Tree Designation for 16th Street, east of Dover Drive
Recommendation
To approve the parkway street tree designation of Podocarpus gracilior (Fern
Pine) for 16th Street, east of Dover Drive.
Discussion
The Commission at the October 1, 1996 meeting, approved to designate the
Pyrus calleryana " Aristocrat " (Aristocrat Pear) as the designated street tree for
both sides of 16th Street, east of Dover Drive.
Taylor Woodrow Homes per the attached letter, has now requested that the
• designated tree be Podocarpus gradhor (Fern Pine) and that the firm will
maintain the new street trees on 16th Street per City trimming specifications.
Additionally, as part of the recommendation Taylor Woodrow Homes will plant,
per City specifications, 36 " boxed trees with deep root barriers to ensure the
appearance of a mature landscape along 16th Street.
Staff has no objections to the change of designation. An approval of the request
will result in the use of a non - deciduous specimen adjacent to a City park.
Information sheets and photos of the two-species (Aristocrat Pear and Fern Pine)
are attached. A local specimen of Fern Pine is located at 2431 Bamboo Street.
Ms. Flanagan has received a copy of this report and a notice of the January 7
Commission meeting.
Very respectfully,
David E. Niederhaus

LANDSCAPE
Dear Mr. Niederhaus:
Taylor Woodrow Homes is requesting to change the approved parkway street trees
along Castaways Lane (16th Street) from 36 -inch box Pyrus Calleryana 'Aristocrat' to
36 -inch box Podocarpus Gracilior. The Podocarpus Gracilior is an evergreen canopy
tree that will provide the community with a much nicer street scene than the Pyrus
Calleryana `Aristocrat'. These trees will be planted with a deep root barrier system that
• is acceptable to the City. In addition, Taylor Woodrow has agreed to accept the
maintenance responsibility for tree trimming.
We hope that you will give the above request careful consideration. If you have any
questions, please feel free to call me or Tom Redwitz.
Kind regards,
TAYLOR WOODROW HOMES

(Fern Pine, African Fern Pine) Chart: A14
Podocarpaceae ( Podocatpus family)
Origin: East Africa
Species characteristics:
Form - Evergreen conifer. A large, upright tree of moderate growth to 60'
with equal spread. Dense growth, finely textured, spreading to slightly droop-
ing branchlets.
Trunk - Bark has flaking gray platelets on a straight trunk.
Foliage - Leaves are I - 2" long and 1/4" wide, resembling those of related
yews, but broader and lighter, depending on method of propagation. Seed-
lings, usually sold as Podocaypus gracilior, are more upright, have branches
less willowy, more evenly spaced, with longer leaves of a dark glossy green.
Cutting -grown and grafted plants, usually sold as Podocaipus elatgatus, are
slow to develop vertically, branches are more weeping and limber, with,
shorter, bluish or grayish leaves.
Flowers/fruit - Flowers are borne only on female trees, very small and incon-
spicuous. Fruit are fleshy drupes with a single seed on mature female trees, if
a male pollenizer is nearby.
No significant pest problems.
Site suitability:
Sunset zones - 8, 9, 13 - 24 and warmest areas of 12.
Clearances - Suitable for 8 - 12' parkways or 10 - 20' medians.
