HomeMy WebLinkAboutIV-3 - RSS Activity Report (5)Agenda Item No. January 6, 1998 40 COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT DATE: December 23, 1997 TO: Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Commission FROM: Celeste Jardine -Haug SUBJECT: Senior Services Division - Monthly Commission Report Holiday Gifts Delivered — During the month of December, we collected gifts for children who are less fortunate than most. Seniors picked children's names from our Christmas tree ,and purchased a gift that was appropriate. The two groups that were selected to adopt were Head Start in Laguna Beach and an Abused Women's shelter in Irvine. Two staff members and two seniors had the pleasure of delivering the gifts to Head Start. The children sang songs for us, and we thoroughly enjoyed watching their delight in receiving their presents. This was a reassuring experience to see how programs, such as this, can make a difference in family's lives. Food Drive — Canned food was collected during the month of December for donating to SOS. 12 boxes of food were delivered to help provide Christmas dinner for low- income families. OASIS Seniors have always been generous and enjoy assisting with this effort. • Holiday Functions — The Holidays are many times difficult for Seniors, therefore, we try to fill their time with upbeat activities. The Friends of OASIS held their annual Christmas Party on Saturday December 6 0; A sing -a -long was held on December 11 °i which included Harbor Day School's Handbell choir; December 19" marked the day of our annual Christmas luncheon for 150 people; The Friends of OASIS ended the month with a New Year's Eve Party on December 31". Membership Drive — The annual membership dues are collected beginning January 1, 1998. The dues are one portion of the Friends of OASIS's revenue. They will remain at $7:00 for a single person and $10.00 for a couple. Currently, the membership is at 5,500, and we anticipate a slight increase in that number. Future Activities — Coming up in January will be the over 80's party on January 28 ", and Febnr be a Dinner Theater Fundraiser. 0 0 0 • Passage Utilization Report November 1997 OASIS SENIOR CENTER, , PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING 6643 .
