Special Meetings
Joint Meeting with Costa Mesa Parks & Recreation = A reminder that the joint meeting with
Costa Mesa is scheduled for October 8, 6pm, Costa Mesa City Hall, 5th Floor Conference
Room, 77 Fair Drive.
Special Meeting — A reminder that a special meeting has been called for Thursday, October
15, 4:3Opm, City Council Chambers, to discuss Bonita Canyon Park.
Flag Football — The Youth Flag Football League held its first game on Thursday, September 24.
There are 16 teams in the league, 10 "B" Division teams and 6 "C" Division teams. Each of the 6
elementary schools in Newport Beach is hosting at least two teams of children grades 3 through
6. Anderson School, which has not had a team for three years, has three teams this season.
•Part -time staff work as coaches to teach children the fundamentals of football. Practices are
held after school at the elementary school sites. All games are held at Grant Howald Park on
Thursday and Friday evenings.
Pee Wee Flag Football Clinic — The clinic began Friday, September 25 at Grant Howald Park with
over 42 participants. This program is offered to first and second grade boys and girls and is
taught by the Recreation staff coaches. During the 7 -week clinic, children learn the fundamentals
of passing, catching, defense, kicking and punting. There will be five weeks of instruction and
two weeks of scrimmages.
Rusty - Newport Surf Contest — The sixth annual Rusty- Newport Pro -Am Surf Contest was held
Thursday through Sunday, September 17 -20, and included 80 men and 20 women. In the
amateur division there were over 200 participants and was open to all ages and included 5 entry
divisions, beginning with elementary school children.
Halloween Carnival — The annual Halloween extravaganza will be held on Friday, October 30 at
Grant Howald park from 3- 6:30pm. Children of all ages can participate in carnival games,
including dart balloon toss, football throw, and the duck pond game. The event will also include
strolling performers and holiday arts and crafts.
Classes /Instruction- Fall classes began the week of September 21 with a flurry of registration
activity. As of September 23, there were 1,494 people registered in fall classes.
The winter Navigator is scheduled to go to the printer at the end of October. A list of new
classes and /or instructors for the winter season is attached.

Special Events - The Balboa Family Festival, Saturday October 3, from 11am -5pm at Peninsula
Park. The day will start off with a marionette show for kids, followed by live music and plenty of
craft vendors, food, and activities during the day. Planned activities include dance clinics,
demonstrations, face painting and much more.

Winter Season — New Classes - Available for Enrollment December 1998
• A Night of Dancing — Swing and Ballroom Dance
Teens through seniors are invited to come dance to music from the '40s through the
'90s. There will be lots of swinging action as well as some smooth swaying —from
swing to waltz. Teens under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Location: Oasis
Art Parties
Each guest will take home a project from your child's creative art birthday party.
Designed for children from age four through 12, around any party theme, these
parties are memorable for all celebrants. A minimum of 10 children is required.

Swino- Jitterbug Dance Party
Looking for a new way to entertain party guests? How about getting them up and
dancing with sounds and moves from the '40s, that have been revitalized for the'90s?
We'll teach your guests of all ages to dance using swing, ballroom and jitterbug
techniques.

Musical Storytime for Parents & Tots
Parents will learn to provide a musical environment for their children through listening,
movement, simple rhythm instruments and games using age- appropriate songs and
• chants. Parent participation is required.
Instructor: Cynthia Faisst
Location: Eastbluff Boys and Girls Club
Kindermusik Village
Some secrets of babies and music will be revealed through listening, movement,
poetry, song and a variety of special manipulative. Parents will learn the purpose of
each activity and how it will stimulate a baby's brain. They will take home a journal
filled with ideas for spending meaningful time together.

Little Scientists
In this "hands -on" approach to learning, preschoolers will use the scientific method to
hypothesize, predict, measure, test, observe and compare in a risk -free environment.
Students will eagerly share their discoveries and their answers to such issues as why
the sky is blue, how planes stay in the air and why balls bounce..

Tots Ice Skating
Little ones will learn skating fundamentals, including how to stand, march, fall and get
• up properly. Using theme weeks and creative play, we'll provide a positive experience
that will bring a lifetime of enjoyment. Fee includes admission, skate rental and
practice on class day.

Successful T -Ball
• Children will enjoy mastering basic t -ball skills, including the correct form for catching,
throwing, batting and base running. These skills will be taught as small, achievable
components to insure success during the learning process. Through Marti's "Learning
Through Success" methods, children will be able to perform on a team with increased
confidence.

Children will enjoy mastering basic basketball skills, including the correct form for
passing, dribbling and shooting. These skills will be taught as small, achievable
components to insure success during the learning process. Through Marti's "Learning
Through Success" methods, children will be able to perform on a team with increased

Ice Skating =Youth
Have fun learning basic skating skills, including stroking, stops and turns at the new
Irvine Ice Arena.

Art -Z -Kids
• Taught by Lisa Albert's Art School and Creative Arts for Kids, children will explore a
mixed media art class, as well as a fairytale theater and song class. The art class will
explore color, painting, printing, collage and drawing using ink, oil pastels,
watercolors, acrylic and tempera paint, clay, papier mache and plaster.

Art for Kids
Using a variety of media, children will create projects based on two- and three -
dimensional design concepts. We'll also explore color theory, painting, printing, collage
and drawing techniques using ink, pastels, acrylic and tempera paints, clay and
plaster.

Massage Workshop
Relieve stress and enhance your energy level. This workshop will teach the
fundamentals of back, foot and self- massage. A variety of therapeutic techniques will
be covered. No experience is necessary. Bring a friend or loved one, wear loose -fit
clothing and bring a towel. All materials will be provided.

Re: Monthly Activities Report
FALL CLASSES BEGIN — Fall classes began September 8. New classes include The History of
Orange County, Meditation, Ballroom Dance Lessons, Creative Writing, and foods Around
the World. Each of these classes are well attended and complement the existing classes.
COMPUTER FRIENDS MEETING — The OASIS Computer Users Networking Group met
September 9 with 150 people in attendance. Librarians June Pilsitz and Susie Lamb
presented Using the Library Tips and Tricks which included a demonstration on the
Windows based catalog and How to effectively use digital databases on the web and the
Library's Local Area NewworkNetworking was also discussed.
NEW SUPPORT GROUP OFFERED AT OASIS — Human Options is offering a Women'? Life Stress
• Support Group for seniors. The group is being held every Wednesday at 12:30pm.
Women experiencing loneliness, depression, difficulties with a spouse or adult children will
be helped by the group. The group is lead by Natalie Zucker, a retired Psychologist.
POOL ROOM AND SHUFFLE BOARD COURTS REMODEL — The Friends of OASIS have upgraded
the pool room by installing pool room type lights above the 3 tables. The shuffleboard
courts also have had a face -lift. New painted floor surface, benches, and cabinets have put
a fresh look to the old courts.
UPCOMING EVENTS —
Oktoberfest — OASIS is holding a traditional Oktoberfest on Wednesday October
7, 12:00pm. The menu includes Sauerbraten, potato pancakes and apple pie,
with an eight piece German band will entertain. The cost of this event is $8.00.
Jazz Concert — The Night Blooming Jazzmen will be performing an OASIS on
Sunday, Oct. 11. This band is one of the top Dixieland bands in the country.
They have performed all over the world from Russia to Japan. This will be their
fifth performance at OASIS and it is always a sell out at 375 people. The cost
for,this event is $2 for OASIS members and $5 for non - members.
