Both divisions have been extremely busy with a full range of activities and services, remodeling and refurbishment projects. 39 (Item 3) January 4, 2000 Page 2 COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT • Arts & Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Andrea McGuire, Acting Senior Recreation Manager Re: Recreation Division Monthly Activities Report Classes /Instruction Fall Classes ended in December with attendance up slightly to a total of 2,355, from 2,215 in 1998). There is a short break before winter 2000 classes start on January 10. Registration has begun for the winter term. The spring Navigator will be going to print in late January. New instructors scheduled for the spring session include: Southwind Kayak Center -- kayaking classes and surf kayaking skills Allan Siposs- -How to Start and Succeed in Your Own Business Jacki King - -Yoga • James Poindexter -- Martial Arts (Kung Fu) Deborah O'Hara -- Sign Language Adult Sports • Softball - Softball concluded on December 15 with over 2,000 games played on City fields during the year. Approximately 370 teams participated on 8 different fields during the year. The City continues to get the most out of available park facilities. • Basketball - Basketball concluded December 2 with 1,300 games played at four gyms in Newport Beach, throughout 1999. Approximately 260 teams were scheduled for league play. Participants continue to return to play season after season due to the fact that the City has the finest facilities in Orange County. Teams continue to compliment staff on the outstanding facility at the West Newport Community Center. A uatics - December is quiet at the pool as NBAC and Junior Water Polo recessed until January and the CDM High Schoolboys water polo team ended their season. Lap swim remains steady at an average of 30 swimmers per night. Total Lap Swim Participation for December was 618. Youth Programs Basketball - Winter basketball begins January 8 at West Newport Gymnasium and Eastbluff Boys and Girls Club. Team practices began December 7 at seven local elementary schools. Currently • 27 teams with 200 participants are registered for the league. The league consists of 2 divisions in each the boys and girls league. Division C is for children in grades 3 -4 and Division B is for children in the grades 5 and 6. Lfb (Item 3) January 4, 2000 Page 3 • Sports Camp - The Holiday Kids Sports Camp at the Community Youth Center in Corona del Mar kicked off its 2nd year on December 20. Two, four day sessions, 10am - 4pm, were offered over the holiday break with children enjoying a variety of crafts, games and sports activities throughout the day. Community Service Department Recreation Leaders and Youth Coaches taught children the fundamentals of popular sports such as basketball, flag football, soccer, court hockey, softball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, broomball and more. Both sessions were fully enrolled, doubling enrollment from last year. Facilities Field Repair - Work started in early December to repair softball, baseball, football and soccer fields at Bonita Creek Park and Lincoln Athletic Center. Thousands of games are played year - round on these fields subjecting them to damage from overuse. These fields hold up very well considering the amount of games played on them. This month to two -month renovation period will bring the fields back to top shape for the spring 2000 sport season. Renovation - Grant Howald Field Renovation is ready to go to bid. It is anticipated that work will begin in March or April. Special Events • Rent -A -Santa - Santa was busy this year with 39 parties scheduled. During Boat Parade weekend, Santa made 13 stops. • Rose Parade -The 2000 Tournament of Roses Parade excursion was sold out by December 1. One hundred and thirty eight participants traveled to Pasadena to view the event in grand stand seating. As part of the entry fee, participants receive a continental breakfast before the event and lunch on the way home. Snow Day - The annual Winter Wonderland snow day was a tremendous success. Over 600 participants created holiday arts and crafts, played in the snow and created snow creatures. The hit of the party was Santa arriving via a fire engine. The Newport Harbor Elks Club makes the event possible with their generous donation. Meetings • Youth Sports Commission - The Commission met on December 9 to set the field use schedule for the March 1 through June 30, 2000 season. Representatives from AYSO, Little League, Bobby Sox, Club Soccer, Pony Baseball, and the Newport Harbor Baseball programs met with City staff to divide up field space for this time period. The City continues to get cooperation from all groups to meet the tremendous demand for field space. PB%tR Subcommittee - Park and Open Space Committee met in November and December regarding a proposal for park use for part of the Marinapark Property. A report is being presented at the January meeting. is q1 (Item 3) January 4, 2000 Page 4 COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT • Arts 8 Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager Re: Senior Services Division Monthly Activities Report Holiday Outreach Programs - OASIS members contributed to the following programs during the holiday season: • Serving People in Need (SPIN) - Hand knit caps for the street people • Local Convalescent Homes - Hand knit afghans • Toys for Tots - Toys • Share Our Selves (SOS) - Canned food drive • Fruit baskets - Made up at OASIS and delivered to homebound seniors STOP -GAP Performance - A play and discussion entitled Every Part of Me, about the emotional issues related to breast cancer, was performed by the STOP -GAP players on Friday, December 17, at OASIS. The play told the story of three different cancer patients whose paths crossed while waiting in the doctor's waiting room. The program was open to all without cost. This performance was very moving to all involved. . Holiday Luncheon - The OASIS held a holiday luncheon for seniors on Wednesday, December 22. Arnie DiCioccio played holiday songs on the piano. This time of year is often difficult for many seniors, especially those who are isolated from their families. Approximately 150 seniors enjoyed the afternoon. New Years Eve Party - The Friends of OASIS held a New Years Eve Party from 8pm to Midnight on December 31. Their theme was A Stroll Down Memory Lane. The event included food, entertainment and dancing at a cost of $20 per person. have worked very hard on the decorations and entertainment. Holiday Party - Harbor Day School honored the center with a wonderful performance of the 8`h grade handbells choir.
