• Tree Division Activities
During the month of July, 848 trees were trimmed, 7 trees removed, 44 trees planted and 4
emergency calls were responded to regarding trees. The Urban Forester received 57 tree
maintenance requests.
1. The City tree- trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, completed work within the
Cameo and Harbor View Hills areas. Work has begun in the Balboa Peninsula and
Broadmoor Hills areas and is scheduled for completion late this fall. Additionally, the
annual tree trimming will begin in early September of City palm and coral trees
throughout the City in anticipation of the winter storms.
2. The planting of 5 large Magnolia trees (36" box size) was completed on Mariners Drive
between Dover Drive and Irvine Avenue. This was a coordinated project between staff
and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. The tree planting is a major enhancement
not only for the school, but also for the entire neighborhood per the attached City Council
Newsletter. Adjacent property owners plan to contribute to the funding of this project.
3. Staff is testing a new tree stake (Reddy Stake System) which benefits a newly planted
tree, is vandal resistant, and is reusable. This new product was used on the Mariners
• Drive tree- planting project and along Dover Drive parkway adjacent to Bob Henry Park.
Staff will monitor the product's effectiveness at these locations before implementing the
stakes elsewhere. The attached literature explains the new product.
4. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program with the
General Services Department Concrete Supervisor and the Public Works Inspector. This
involved the Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk-repairs.
5. The planting of 13, 36" box Camphor replacement trees on Bonita Canyon Road median
was completed. The original trees were planted too deep by the installation contractor
and were in decline during the past year.
6. The attached Tree Activity Report is for your review and summarizes the work that has
transpired during the past few months.
