ADULT SPORTS
(Item 3)
January 2, 2001
Adult Basketball - The winter adult basketball leagues begin the week of January 8 with a total 77
teams participating in 10 different leagues. Games will be played each weeknight at West Newport
Community Center, Ensign School, and Lincoln Athletic Center.
Adult Softball - Fall leagues wrapped up play on December 20 with 95 teams completing their
seasons. Many of the past seasons players complimented the Department on its choice of
championship awards, which were sweat shirts embroidered with the City logo. The 2001 spring
leagues begin the week of February 5 with games played at Bonita Creek Park, Lincoln Athletic
Center, and Grant Howald Park (CYC). Registration is currently underway.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Flap
a Football - The inaugural Battle of the Beach Flag Football Tournament was held on the beach
near Newport Elementary School on December 9 and 10. The eight participating Newport Beach
• teams experienced play on the City's oldest sports field with a school of dolphins watching from the
shoreline. Championship honors went to the teams from the Community Youth Center, undefeated
in their respective divisions.
Youth Basketball - A Season of Sportsmanship is underway for 23 youth basketball teams involved in
the City's recreational league. This year's program is focused on creating an experience where
each child increases their skill level, practices teamwork, demonstrates sportsmanship and has fun.
Several unique activities have been planned to promote and recognize sportsmanship among the
players, parents and coaches throughout the season. The Team Announcement Night in December
created an opportunity for staff to articulate goals of the basketball program as well allow for
coach, player and parent interaction.
Winter Sports Camp - Approximately 60 boys and girls attended the Kids Winter Sports Camp at the
Community Youth Center. Activities included trips to the beach for sand soccer, beach football and
volleyball with special craft projects and a variety of games and contests each day.
AQUATICS
Marian Begeson Aquatic Center - Activity at the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center slowed down
somewhat during the month of December due to the holidays, cooler air temperatures and a brief
hiatus between aquatic sports. Current pool users include Newport Beach Aquatic Club, adult lap
swimmers and Sage Hill High School who continues to rent the pool 3 nights a week for girls water
• polo.
The pool was closed for lap swim December 24, 25, 31 and January 1.

SPECIAL EVENTS
(Item 3)
January 2, 2001
• Rent -A -Santa - A team of three Santa's helped make the Rent -a -Santa program the most popular in
recent history. Sixty party visits were assigned throughout December with Santa involved in
everything from banquets to boat parades. In total, the City Saint Nick's touched over 2,500
individuals this winter season.
Winter Wonderland - The annual snow festival at Grant Howald Park was an entertaining day for
many Newport Beach families with 500 boys and girls in attendance, and actively involved in
Christmas craft projects, games and relays, visits with Santa and of course, snow play. Every inch
of the 20 tons of snow was occupied by children and parents who chose to create snow creatures,
throw snowballs, and have a good time.
FACILITIES MAINTENANCE
Rentals - During the period November 15 through December 14 there were:
• 8 Picnic Area Rentals
• 8 Room Rentals
• 3 Field Rentals

project is in preparation for the possible CIP project to install heat in the building.

developed to test ballfield lights in late January or early February.
Bonita Canyon Sports Park - Construction is proceeding on schedule with the building foundations at
East Park and West Park.

Monthly Activities Report (Item 3)
January 2, 2001
COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Arts £t Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors
is To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission
From: Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager
Re: Seniors Division Monthly Activities Report
Pancake Breakfast - The OASIS Center had a very festive pancake breakfast on Saturday the 9en
Included was holiday music and Cranberry- eggnog pancakes. This event is truly a community event
with many school children helping to serve and clean -up.
Life on Your Own - A successful new group has formed called Life On Your Own. This is a group of
people who are alone due to a loss of a spouse. They meet every Friday and discuss an array of
topics, plan social events and provide support to one another.
Holiday Luncheon - Traditionally, holiday times can be very difficult for older adults who are alone.
The OASIS staff made this time a little easier by planning a special holiday luncheon on December
19. The Dickens Carolers provided entertainment with a full turkey dinner and all the trimmings
were served.
Holiday Celebration - Many opportunities are available for people to participate in the spirit of the holidays.
Each year, staff members coordinate efforts to provide for people who are more needy than others. These
• include participation in the Toys for Tots program, canned food drive for SOS's adopt -a- family program,
knitting of lap blankets and caps for seniors in convalescent homes and "Street People in Need," and
donations towards gift baskets for homebound seniors. These programs keep the Center busy during the
holidays; gifts are given in the name of OASIS Senior Center.
Millennium Party - The Friends of OASIS are holding a fabulous affair to ring in the new year.
Instead of having a New Year's Eve party, they decided to celebrate the Millennium on December
29 during lunch. The event will include a buffet lunch, live music for dancing, a magician and a
psychic.
