HomeMy WebLinkAbout03 - Recreation Division Monthly Activities ReportMonthly Activities Report (Item 3) September 4, 2001 COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT 0 Arts a Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Andrea McGuire, Senior Recreation Manager Re: Recreation Division Monthly Activities Report ADULT SPORTS Adult Softball - The 2001 summer Adult Softball leagues wrapped up league play with 68 coed teams, 59 men's teams and six women's teams making up the program. With an emphasis placed on energy conservation, many of the games scheduled during the summer season were in the sunlight hours. Thus, the use of sports field lights was greatly reduced. The fall softball program is expecting 100 teams for league play at Bonita Creek, Lincoln and Arroyo Parks. Adult Basketball - The 2001 summer Adult Basketball marked the 8`h consecutive season the program's enrollment has reached capacity. Many players and spectators were treated to watching several NBA players display their skills as participants in the summer league. YOUTH PROGRAMS Sports Camp - The third year of summer camp was very well attended with a total of 425 children participating in this year's program (compared to 180 children in 2000). Popular activities included • sports such as lacrosse, ultimate, disc golf, flag football, basketball, soccer, and court hockey. Weekly field trips to attractions such as Universal Studios, Wild Rivers, Knott's Berry Farm and the San Diego Zoo were also big hit. Youth Summer Hoops- The Summer Hoops Program wrapped up league play on Wednesday, August 15, with over 200 children participating in the program. The boys and girls playing on each team shared the experience of competing in a positive, friendly and peaceful environment. The Community Services Department's long - standing goal of making team sports fun and accessible to all kids, of all abilities, was achieved with the Summer Hoops Program. Youth Flag Football - Flag football practices begin the week September 17 at six local elementary schools. Games are proposed to be played at Arroyo Park on Friday evenings. Two divisions are offered; division "C" for 3rd and 4`h graders and division "B" for 5`h and 6`h graders. After - School Programs Several significant changes are being made to the after - school programs offered in the upcoming academic year. Children attending the after - school sites will experience: • More personalized attention with a greater staff to child ratio • An opportunity to complete school work in a carefully supervised homework center • A variety of structured program activities each day plus opportunities for self expression • A safer environment while being under the watchful eye of staff at all times Unlike year's past, parents who want their children involved in the City's after - school programs • must register their child. Enrollment will be limited and a $20 monthly fee will be assessed. Unfortunately, staff learned in mid August that the Newport Heights site is unavailable in the upcoming school year. Services for the children in that district will be continued at West Newport Community Center. The NMUSD offers transportation from Newport Heights Elementary School to the West Newport Community Center. Montnly Activities Report (Item 3) September 4, 2001 Punt. Pass and Kick - The Community Services Department will be hosting the local competition for • the NFL /Gatorade Punt Pass and Kick on Sunday, September 23. All children ages 8 -15, are invited to participate. Winners may advance to the sectional competition in October, followed by the regionals in December at a San Diego Chargers football game. There were 397 activities held during the summer months with 3764 participants. Registration for fall 2001 classes began August 20; classes begin the week of September 17. Survey Report - A customer satisfaction survey card was included in the summer 2001 Newport Navigator. There were a total of 228 responses; five questions were asked to get a feel for how the Recreation Division is doing in the eyes of the community. PARK DEVELOPMENT Bonita Canyon Sports Park - Weed abatement began in East Park; irrigation is being completed in West Park. is Newport Shores Park Playground - Playground design is complete and a final meeting with residents will be held in September before the equipment is ordered. Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) September 4, 2001 Bavview Landing - Preliminary design meetings continue with the architect. 38th Street Playground - Equipment has arrived; construction will start August 29; with playground completion expected by September 10. SPECIAL EVENTS Concerts in the Park The City of Newport Beach Arts Commission held their first ever Eight swing Other Facility Inspections - The Commission packet contains this year's facility inspection assignments. • These inspections are meant to trigger needed repairs and to compile list of capital improvement projects to propose for FY 2002/03. Please complete and turn in inspections by November 1. If your list includes any buildings, please make arrangements prior to your inspection to have the facility open or obtain a key. Bonita Creek Park ADA access to the football field - Staff continues to work with General Services for the best solution for this access. Bonita Creek Storage Facility - Staff is working with the Public Works Department to prepare bid specifications. Bonita Creek Light Replacement - Bid documents for the project are in final phase and are expected to be published in September. Youth Sports Commission - At last month's meeting, resident Jay Torres requested staff investigate the residency compliance of the Stammers Soccer Club. To date, staff has received incomplete documentation from the Slammers and is still working with the group's leaders to verify rosters and other documentation for continued co- sponsorship. Goodbye to Kristen Carey - Kristen Carey, Recreation Manager has decided to return to Oregon. Staff will miss her as she has been a vital member of the team for the past year. Recruitment for her replacement will begin September 10 with an appointment in November. Monthly Activities Report COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT Arts ft Cultural - Library - Recreation - Seniors To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager Re: Seniors Division Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) September 4, 2001 Twilight Dinner - OASIS Staff and the Meals on Wheels program joined together to offer an early dinner program on August 17. The program was a sell out with 160 people and included a delicious dinner and a musical program featuring Deborah Johnson, entitled An evening with George Gershwin. The Newport Beach Rotary Club assisted with 15 volunteers in serving the meat. The cost for the event was a nominal $6. Stroke Screenine Clinic — A stroke screening clinic was held August 22 and 23. Health Guardian, a health screening and ultrasound imaging company provided a screening of the Cortaid artery to detect ones risk of having a stroke. All available appointments were booked. Senior Scam Lecture — A panel presentation was held August 22, targeting older Californians, informing consumers of their rights when hiring contractors and how to avoid common rip -off schemes. It will cover remodeling, auto repair frauds, with speakers from the Contractors State • License Board. Bureau of Automotive Repair, and AARP. This is an important issue for seniors as they are commonly targeted by scam artists. New Classes Begin — The fall season of classes at OASIS provided without costs by the Coastline Emeritus Program begin next week. Of the 15 offerings, three are new — • Nutrition for Sexagenarians and Others • Body Align and Condition • Humor and Memory Enhancement. Other exciting new classes beginning in September include — • Art Masters for Adults • OASIS Book Club, conducted by a librarian from the City Library. Capital Improvement Projects - The painting of the entire inside of the Senior Center and its' offices was completed this month just in time for the replacement and retrofit of a new lighting system to begin. A contractor has been selected and will soon begin replacing the outside lighting and inside of classrooms.
