ADULT SPORTS
Adult Softball - The 2001 summer Adult Softball leagues wrapped up league play with 68 coed
teams, 59 men's teams and six women's teams making up the program. With an emphasis placed
on energy conservation, many of the games scheduled during the summer season were in the
sunlight hours. Thus, the use of sports field lights was greatly reduced. The fall softball program is
expecting 100 teams for league play at Bonita Creek, Lincoln and Arroyo Parks.
Adult Basketball - The 2001 summer Adult Basketball marked the 8`h consecutive season the
program's enrollment has reached capacity. Many players and spectators were treated to watching
several NBA players display their skills as participants in the summer league.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Sports Camp - The third year of summer camp was very well attended with a total of 425 children
participating in this year's program (compared to 180 children in 2000). Popular activities included
• sports such as lacrosse, ultimate, disc golf, flag football, basketball, soccer, and court hockey.
Weekly field trips to attractions such as Universal Studios, Wild Rivers, Knott's Berry Farm and the
San Diego Zoo were also big hit.
Youth Summer Hoops- The Summer Hoops Program wrapped up league play on Wednesday, August
15, with over 200 children participating in the program. The boys and girls playing on each team
shared the experience of competing in a positive, friendly and peaceful environment. The
Community Services Department's long - standing goal of making team sports fun and accessible to
all kids, of all abilities, was achieved with the Summer Hoops Program.
Youth Flag Football - Flag football practices begin the week September 17 at six local elementary
schools. Games are proposed to be played at Arroyo Park on Friday evenings. Two divisions are
offered; division "C" for 3rd and 4`h graders and division "B" for 5`h and 6`h graders.
After - School Programs Several significant changes are being made to the after - school programs
offered in the upcoming academic year. Children attending the after - school sites will experience:
• More personalized attention with a greater staff to child ratio
• An opportunity to complete school work in a carefully supervised homework center
• A variety of structured program activities each day plus opportunities for self expression
• A safer environment while being under the watchful eye of staff at all times
Unlike year's past, parents who want their children involved in the City's after - school programs
• must register their child. Enrollment will be limited and a $20 monthly fee will be assessed.
Unfortunately, staff learned in mid August that the Newport Heights site is unavailable in the
upcoming school year. Services for the children in that district will be continued at West Newport
Community Center. The NMUSD offers transportation from Newport Heights Elementary School to
the West Newport Community Center.

Twilight Dinner - OASIS Staff and the Meals on Wheels program joined together to offer an early
dinner program on August 17. The program was a sell out with 160 people and included a delicious
dinner and a musical program featuring Deborah Johnson, entitled An evening with George
Gershwin. The Newport Beach Rotary Club assisted with 15 volunteers in serving the meat. The cost
for the event was a nominal $6.
Stroke Screenine Clinic — A stroke screening clinic was held August 22 and 23. Health Guardian, a
health screening and ultrasound imaging company provided a screening of the Cortaid artery to
detect ones risk of having a stroke. All available appointments were booked.
Senior Scam Lecture — A panel presentation was held August 22, targeting older Californians,
informing consumers of their rights when hiring contractors and how to avoid common rip -off
schemes. It will cover remodeling, auto repair frauds, with speakers from the Contractors State
• License Board. Bureau of Automotive Repair, and AARP. This is an important issue for seniors as
they are commonly targeted by scam artists.
New Classes Begin — The fall season of classes at OASIS provided without costs by the Coastline
Emeritus Program begin next week. Of the 15 offerings, three are new —
• Nutrition for Sexagenarians and Others
• Body Align and Condition
• Humor and Memory Enhancement.
Other exciting new classes beginning in September include —
• Art Masters for Adults
• OASIS Book Club, conducted by a librarian from the City Library.
Capital Improvement Projects - The painting of the entire inside of the Senior Center and its'
offices was completed this month just in time for the replacement and retrofit of a new lighting
system to begin. A contractor has been selected and will soon begin replacing the outside lighting
and inside of classrooms. This entire project will provide huge savings in energy costs while
improving the lighting quality.
