SUBJECT: Parks and Trees Divisions Activities Report
Park Division Activities
1. Staff continued coordinating the construction of the Bonita Canyon Sports Park with the
Public Works Department.
2. Five donated benches, that had previously been approved by the Commission were installed
at Eastbluff Park, Grant Howald Park, Old School Park, and the Balboa Pier.
• 3. Two tree donations, that had previously been approved by the Commission were planted at
Grant Howald Park and Old School Park.
4. Staff is coordinating an emergency sewer main line replacement with the Public Works
Department. The sewer line crosses the West Newport Park at 58`t' Street and West Coast
Highway and will be monitored by staff to assure that the site is protected as much as
possible and subsequent follow -up repairs will be made once the project is completed.
5. The Phase Two Walkway Replacement Project at Eastbluff Park has tentatively scheduled to
begin in mid - November. This project will complete the replacement of the existing asphalt
walks that are in a poor condition.
UURcoming Activities for October
1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground cover will continue Citywide.
2. Staff will continue to monitor the Arches Mitigation Site in the Big Canyon area.
3. Staff will continue coordinating the annual control of rodents with contract services.

• Tree Division Activities
During the month of September, 1435 trees were trimmed, 66 trees were planted, and 6
emergency calls were responded to regarding trees. The Urban Forester received 63 tree
maintenance requests. Other updates include:
1. The City tree- trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, is trimming throughout the Buffalo
Hills area, which is scheduled for completion this winter. Additionally, the annual tree
trimming prior to winter storms of palm, coral, and selected trees began August 1, is 33%
completed.
2. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program with the
Concrete Maintenance Supervisor and the Public Works Inspector. This work involved the
Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk repairs.
3. Staff has been coordinating with the Field Services Division of the General Services
Department for the renovation of public and private property on Clay Street between Irvine
Avenue and St. Andrews Road. The project is multi - phased and included a variety of tasks
to preserve the City parkway Ficus street trees. The major aspects of the project are the
removal of the Ficus tree roots, installation of root barriers, repair of existing concrete
walkways, and landscape renovation. In order to accommodate and protect private property,
• an Indemnity Agreement from each property owner has been collected to allow staff to
encroach upon private property. The project will be completed in early October.

4. The attached Tree Activity Report summarizes work that has been performed during the past
several months.
