Play Ball - The fall seasons of volleyball, flag football, basketball and softball are underway at City
parks and gyms. Arroyo Park saw its first adult softball league game this month and is the now the
"field of dreams" for many of our youth and adult residents.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Flag Football - Recreation staff ventured to six elementary schools to prepare nearly 200 children
for the flag football season. Sixteen teams will get together for league play, which begins October
5 and ends November 16. Each participant in the flag football experience competition in a fun and
relaxed atmosphere while being an essential part of his /her team. All contests will be played this
season at Arroyo Park.
Kids Club /KidScene - Community Services Department after - school programs opened their doors
this fall with a much different look. The Mariner's Park, Community Youth Center and new West
Newport Community Center sites each have a homework center, a comprehensive activities
. program, increased staff to child ratio, and lengthened hours of service. The changes to the
program were initiated after analyzing parent evaluations and recognizing the need to provide a
higher quality of service. The program is no longer considered drop -in, and requires a $20 monthly
fee to register. The program filled to capacity on the first day of registration and waiting lists are
currently maintained at each site.
Punt, Pass and Kick - The Community Services Department recently hosted the local competition for the
NFL - Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Many of the contestants will qualify for regional
competition and hope that they will progress to the finals at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.
