Arroyo Park saw its first adult softball league game this month and is the now the "field of dreams" for many of our youth and adult residents. YOUTH PROGRAMS Flag Football - Recreation staff ventured to six elementary schools to prepare nearly 200 children for the flag football season. Sixteen teams will get together for league play, which begins October 5 and ends November 16. Each participant in the flag football experience competition in a fun and relaxed atmosphere while being an essential part of his /her team. All contests will be played this season at Arroyo Park. Kids Club /KidScene - Community Services Department after - school programs opened their doors this fall with a much different look. The Mariner's Park, Community Youth Center and new West Newport Community Center sites each have a homework center, a comprehensive activities . program, increased staff to child ratio, and lengthened hours of service. The changes to the program were initiated after analyzing parent evaluations and recognizing the need to provide a higher quality of service. The program is no longer considered drop -in, and requires a $20 monthly fee to register. The program filled to capacity on the first day of registration and waiting lists are currently maintained at each site. Punt, Pass and Kick - The Community Services Department recently hosted the local competition for the NFL - Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Many of the contestants will qualify for regional competition and hope that they will progress to the finals at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. Sage Hill School is continuing to rent (shared use) for the 2001 -02 school year, which brings in consist rental revenue. High School Boys Water Polo started playing games in early September and will host a couple of 4 -day tournaments September 20 -22 and October 25 -27. Lap swim will co -exist during these tournaments with limited lane use. Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) 9MWR*vp+ 2001 . CONTRACT CLASSES /INSTRUCTION Classes - Fall classes officially began the week of September 17. Summer reports are in and indicate a slight drop of 4% in attendance for summer of 2001 New Instructor - Cheryl Kimmie will be teaching "Going Bananas" a class for young children and parents on creating nutritious snacks and fun activities this next session. FACILITIES USE AND MAINTENANCE Use - During the period of August 15, 2001 through September 14, 2001 there were: • 27 Park /Picnic Area Rentals • 9 Room Rentals • 7 Field Rentals • 2 Gymnasium Rentals • In addition to the Gym Rentals above, Liberty Christian School used the WNCC Gym for 10 dates. Their new gym will be open soon. • There are 10 ongoing 'self -help' type groups, and 1 church meeting on a weekly or more frequent basis. Two new church groups will be starting regular meetings in the coming month. • There are currently three Scout groups using City of Newport Beach facilities. PARK DEVELOPMENT Bonita Canyon Sports Park - Tennis court and basketball courts are starting construction this month. Parking lots are partially completed. Newport Shores Park Playground - A final meeting with residents was held on September 18 to approve the Playground design. Equipment ordered by October 1 and will take 6 -8 weeks to arrive. 38`h Street Playground - Installation was completed on September 21. Staff has received rave reviews from families in the area. SPECIAL EVENTS Surf Contest - A 4 -6 foot south swell welcomed the 300 surfers participating in the RipCurl Newport Pro and Newport Beach Surf Championships. The five -day event was held at 56th Street Beach, September 5 through 9. A crowd of 500 -1000 spectators were in attendance each day of competition, cheering the spectacular wave riding skills of the contestants. Look for the event to be televised on the Outdoor Life Network on October 22. Sponsors of the event included, Smith Sunglasses, Chevrolet, Surfing Magazine, RipCurl and the Professional Surfing Tour of America. 11 Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) S"Osw =4, 2001 Other 101 �. • Facility Inspections - Commission Packets in September included the facility inspection list and forms. Completed forms are due by the November meeting. • Bonita Creek Park ADA Access to Football Field - Work began at the end of September. Bonita Creek Storage Facility - This project will be started in February of 2002 with bid specifications now being prepared. Bonita Creek Light Replacement - The bid for the light replacement at Bonita Creek was awarded on September 21; work must be completed by January 15, 2002. Electricity - Attached are the electric bills for the co- sponsored youth groups as requested. New Employees Jim Gubser and Matt Dingwall joined the Recreation staff in September. Jim began the new position of full -time Senior Recreation Leader on September 10, and will be working at the Community Youth Center which will involve the oversight of after - school programs, supervision of the CYC facility and coordination of special events. Jim also worked for the Community Services Department as a counselor in the Summer Sports Camp the past three years. Matt joined the Division on September 24 as a Recreation I I Coordinator. Matt will be responsible for facility rental, special events permits and tennis activities. Matt was formerly with the City of Carson and lives in Huntington Beach. The Division is very pleased to have these two professionals on staff.
