ADULT SPORTS
Adult Basketball - Basketball is a priority in the lives of many Newport Beach adults as the Adult
Basketball Program continues to fill to capacity. The winter league will be providing competition
for 79 teams at four local gymnasiums.
Adult Softball - The 95 teams in the fall adult softball league wrapped up play in late December.
Adult play will resume in February. In the interim, the athletic fields will receive much needed
renovation and down time.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Flap- Football
- The second annual "Battle of the
Beach Flag
Football Tournament" was held
between 13th
and 15th Street Beach on Saturday,
December 7.
The eight participating Newport
Beach teams
enjoyed the experience of playing on the City's
original sports field, the beach.
Championship
honors went to the teams from the
Newport Elementary School and Harbor View
School. In 2002, the "Battle for the Beach" event will be moved to September to enable each of
the 16 City teams to come together for play at the beginning their football season.
Youth Basketball - City youth league basketball is underway with boys and girls teams practicing at
six Newport Beach elementary schools. Through participation in the program, each child will
strengthen their physical skills, learn to work as a team, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Opening day is January 19.
Youth Sports Commission - Representatives from Newport Beach youth sports organizations met on
December 12 to discuss athletic field use and allocate use of City parks in the upcoming year. City
staff reported on upcoming facility improvement projects and informed the group of the Bonita
Canyon Park development status, Sunset Ridge acquisition, Mariner's Library project and the
upcoming Vision Festival.
Winter Sports Camp - Approximately 80 boys and girls experienced a sporting holiday at the Winter
Sports Camp. Camp activities included trips to the beach for sand soccer, rugby, lacrosse and
volleyball. The popular program provides a full day of strenuous activity for boys and girls who have
an endless amount of energy. Parents have responded favorably to the program as has been filled
to capacity for three consecutive years

Swim- Adult lap swim attendance has dropped some this month. The holiday pool closures
• (November 22 -25; December 25 and 31, 2001; and January 1 -2, 2002) and cold winter evenings all
contributed to below normal attendance. Laguna Beach High School girl's water polo will be sharing
pool space /time with CdM girls, as the Laguna Beach pool will be shut down for maintenance during
the holiday break. This will not impact City programs.
CONTRACT CLASSESANSTRUCTION
Winter Session - Winter classes start January 7, 2002. The Recreation Division is offering over 120
interesting and challenging classes from Preschool programs to programs for adults of all ages. New
classes include Going Bananas, a class to help parents provide good nutrition for their children;
Camp Technique Boot Camp, a fun gym alternative to help reach personal fitness goals; and In-
Home Training for your Dog or Puppy. Old favorites returning are Blue Angels Youth Ski and
Snowboard program and the Successful Little Athlete program for ages three through six.
New Instructor for Spring - In the spring session, Rob Masters will offer a class on Stained Glass. The
class will have the opportunity to create a small stained glass hanging. Rob Masters, a Public Works
Department staff member, was an honored participant in the Employee Art Show this past year.
FACILITIES USE AND MAINTENANCE
Facility Reservations - During the
reservations at facilities included:
• • 10 Picnic/ Park Area Rentals
• 15 Room Rentals
• 4 Field Rentals
• 4 Gymnasium Rentals
period November 15, 2001, through December 15, 2001,
There was one wedding reservation at Lookout Point.
Bonita Creek Community Center - The Bonita Creek Community Center was fumigated for termites,
December 26 -29. All instructors and users were notified of the unavailability of the building. A
portable restroom was available for the public during that time.
PARK DEVELOPMENT
Bonita Canyon Sports Park - The City is currently waiting for the action of the surety company,
expected late in December, following the contractor's financial difficulties and request for
assistance. There has been little progress on the project since November 8. The completion date of
the contract has passed. In the meantime, the contractor is maintaining a minimal presence at the
site to irrigate and maintain safety.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Rent -A -Santa - A team of three Santa's helped make the Rent -a -Santa program the most popular in
• recent history. Over fifty party visits were assigned throughout December, with Santa involved in
everything from banquets to boat parades. In total, the City Saint Nick's touched over 2000
individuals this winter season.
Monthly Activities Report (Item 3)
Page 4 January 10, 2002
Winter Wonderland - This year's Winter Wonderland accomplished its goal of "providing an
. opportunity for families in the local community to gather together and celebrate the Holiday
season." The event drew approximately 1000 people in attendance, all indulging in the 30 tons of
snow. Department staff and eleven high school volunteers did a fantastic job running all the booths,
from carnival games, to relay races, to the arts and crafts. A highlight of the day included Santa
arriving on the top of a fire truck, taking time to meet with all the children and sending them off
with glowing smiles.
Rose Parade - Tickets, although off to a slow start, were sold out for the successful Rose Parade
event.
Olympic Torch Comes to Newport Beach - On Tuesday morning January 15, the Olympic Torch will
pass through Newport Beach, taking a brief break at City Hall. The route travels from Laguna
Beach down Ocean and Bayside Drive, then crosses Coast Highway and continues down Dover and
Cliff before resting for 15 minutes at City Hall. The entire route will be available to the public
beginning January 7. Recreation staff, the Police Department and the Citys Public Information
Officer, Marilee Jackson have been working with Olympic Torch officials since August of 2001 to
insure a smooth passage. The Mayor and President of the Newport Chamber of Commerce will speak
at the brief ceremony at 9:45am at City Hall (see attached press release).
Other
Resignation Darin Loughrey, Recreation Manager has accepted a position as Recreation Services
• Manager with the City of Vista. Darin has contributed a great deal to this division in his 20 months
with the City, and we wish him success in his new position. There was an active list for Recreation
Manager so a replacement may be announced by mid January.
Facility Inspections - The combined facility inspection report is attached for your review.
Bonita Creek Storage Facility - The budget appropriated for this project, even using the
prefabricated building, was not sufficient for the project costs. Staff is recommending that the
money be carried forward and additional funds be requested to complete the project in 2002.
Bonita Creek Light Replacement - Work for this project is scheduled for January 2002.
Field Conditions - Staff is working with General Services to implement improvements during the off-
season maintenance of the playing fields. The work at Arroyo was completed; Bonita Creek and
Lincoln Fields are currently in progress. Parks Division staff is very responsive to the Recreation
Division needs for playing field maintenance and improvements.
Balboa Island Park - New playground equipment has been ordered for Balboa Island Park, which is
adjacent to Carroll Beek Community Center. Normally six to eight weeks is required for manufacture and
delivery. Installation will be scheduled as soon as possible after arrival. Space constraints and safety
requirements severely limit the equipment which can be installed on the site. The new structure will
include a double slide, a climbing ladder and a crawl through element. Rubberized safety surfacing will
• be installed on the majority of the area, with some sand available for children's play.
California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference - is scheduled from April
3 -6 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and features a series of workshops especially created for
Boards and Commissioners. Commissioners are encouraged to consider attending. However,
registration needs to be completed by the end of January.

OLYMPIC TORCH COMING TO CITY HALL ON JANUARY 15, 2002
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (January 5, 2002) -- Olympic Committee officials are releasing the
Torchbearer routes which will bring the Winter Olympics Torch to Newport Beach City Hall at precisely 9:45 am Tuesday,
January 15, 2002 where a brief 15- minute ceremony and photo opportunity will take place.
The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay travels over 13,500 miles and passes through 46 states.
Torchbearer Landon Donovan will bring the torch to the flagpole at City Hall where Mayor Tod Ridgeway and City
Manager Homer Bludau will welcome the entourage. Roger Alford, Chairman of the Board, Newport Beach Chamber of
Commerce will deliver a message from the Salt Lake 2002 Torch Relay.
Runners are being accompanied by a specially- retrofitted motor home with a hydraulic platform for media wishing to
acquire visuals while runners are moving through the area. Media accreditation credentials are available by submitting the
accompanying applications.
Because of the brief stopping time for the Olympic Torch, spectators and those wishing to have their picture taken
near the Torch should be at City Hall no later than 9:30 am. Olympic officials say there will be a brief (approximately 6
minutes) period of time to interview the Torchbearer and take photos of the Olympic Flame. As a community, this is a
historic opportunity to cheer Olympic Torch runners as they make their way to deliver the Olympic Flame to Salt Lake
City, Utah.
Olympic games start February 8, 2002. More information on the games is available at the Olympic website:
www.sattlake2002.com.

Holiday Sone Fest - Staff planned a festive holiday event on December 12 , which involved seniors
joining together to sing many of the favorite holiday songs while enjoying fellowship. Holiday
goodies and hot apple cider were enjoyed by all.
Holiday Luncheon - Seniors enjoyed a special luncheon celebrating the holiday season on December
19. The meal consisted of all the holiday favorites and participants enjoyed listening to Ami
DiCicco on the piano. The room was filled with 180 people attending.
Charitable Proiects - December is always filled with many charitable giving projects at the OASIS
Center. Led by Vicki Chin, the Human Services Coordinator, projects included gift baskets to
homebound clients, hand knit caps to the homeless, crocheted blankets to nursing home patients,
canned food to SOS, and a 'Toys for Tots" toy drive. Many people provided support for these
programs. At the same time, the programs provided an accessible vehicle for people to provide
help to those less fortunate.
Singing Telegrams - Something new this year were singing telegrams. The Centers' newest
Coordinator is a Music Therapist and brought this great idea to a reality. Telegrams were
purchased for $5 and could be sent to a participant, teacher, employee or whom ever they chose as
long as they were at the Center. Musical talent was provided by volunteers from the Center who
surprised the recipient with balloons and a personalized song. It made the holiday season very
exciting around the Center with many instructors and even the Director of the Center receiving a
telegram.
OASIS New Year's Eve Party - The Friends of OASIS once again hosted a New Year's Eve Gala Event,
on December 31 between the hours of 1:30 and 4:30pm. It included food, music, dancing and
entertainment, at a cost of $10.
Intereenerational Art Show - OASIS held it's first art show that featured artwork from two
generations. Selected artists from the Center and Harbor Day School had the opportunity to show
their works of art at a special display in the OASIS Lobby. A reception was held for the artists, their
families and the public on Wednesday, December 5`h in the late afternoon. The show was held to
allow the generations to interface with each other and have an appreciation for one anothers
talents. The show was a great success with many people enjoying the art, food and drink.
