BACKGROUND Staff received the attached request from Mark Billing on behalf of the Pacific Coast Girls Fastpitch Softball League, a City co- sponsored youth group. Bonita Creek Park is home to the girls softball league that has an enrollment of 350 girls, ages 5 to 16. Games are also played at Bob Henry, Eastbluff, Irvine Terrace and Grant Howald Parks. Batting cages have been erected in a similar fashion at Eastbluff, Mariners and Lincoln Parks by Little League and Pony League. Box 1768 Newport Beach, CA 92658 -8915 Re: Batting Cages at Bonita Creek Park Dear Andrea McGuire, Pacific Coast Girls Fastpitch Softball (PCGFS) would like to build two (2) softball batting cages at Bonita Creek Park to be used by the girls in the local softball league, ages 5 to 16 years old. We understand that local youth groups using the City Parks have a responsibility to • provide improvements to those facilities each year. As other Boy's Clubs and baseball leagues have built batting cages in other parks we wish the opportunity to provide the same amenity for the girls of Newport Beach and the surrounding community. We met with staff, Darin Loughrey and Scott Amend, on 12/05, at Bonita Creek Park to review possible locations for the batting cages. Staff recommended a site on the raised grass area next to the trees at the northeastern corner of the park across from the pumping station and three storage bins (see attached exhibits). We think this is the best site as it is near the storage facility, visually hidden by trees, near utilities, away from the center of the park and more than 150 feet from the residential area north of the park. The cages would only be used during daylight hours by members of PCGFS. Existing parking located next to the playing fields would be close to the cages. Green netting surrounding the cages will help mitigate sound as will the noise from vehicle traffic on University Drive and John Wayne Airport. Thank you for your consideration of this request. We look forward to being on the agenda of the PBR Commission Meeting, 01/08. If you have any question, please call. Sincerely, • Mark Billing, Architect & father of PCGFS player Phone 949 675 -1326 < < « . 2 < <
