SUBJECT: Parks and Tree Divisions Activities Report
Park Division Activities
1. Staff continues coordinating the construction of the Bonita Canyon Sports Park with
the Public Works Department. The eastside of the park that was hydro- seeded in mid -
August has established very well. Additionally, the middle park areas that were hydro -
seeded in early September are filling in quickly with grass. At the west end of the Park,
along Macarthur Boulevard, the tree planting is completed. The Park restroom
buildings are near completion.
• 2. Kevin Pekar, a newly appointed Park Maintenance Crew Chief, started work on
Monday September 9. He is a Certified Arborist and has a background in landscape
and pesticides. Kevin will manage the contract services for the maintenance of the
Newport Coast median and roadside areas assumed as part of the annexation
agreement. He will also manage the contract services for the maintenance of all sports
parks. Kevin is one of three Crew Chiefs in the Parks Division. Bob Martinez, Crew
Chief, manages contract services of other City Park medians and roadsides and Paul
Ramirez supervises all City Park Maintenance Staff.
3. The Commission approved the Orchid tree donation that was installed at Grant Howald
Park.
4. Three Commission approved bench donations were installed, one at "L" Street Park,
and two at the "M" Street median on the Balboa Peninsula.
5. Irrigation and landscaping was installed on the Balboa Boulevard new median at "A"
Street as part of the Village Improvement Program.
6. Architectural plans for renovating the Goldenrod Avenue Footbridge were completed.
• The project replaces the worn flower boxes on the bridge and provides for new
lighting. Several varieties of colorful Geraniums will be planted in the planters.

7. Staff continues to monitor the redevelopment of the Irvine Avenue medians between
Westcliff Drive and Dover Drive and Jamboree Road medians between Bristol Street
and Campus Drive.
Upcoming Activities for September
1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide.
2. Staff will continue to monitor the Arches Mitigation Site in the Big Canyon area.
3. Staff will continue coordinating the annual control of rodents with contract services.
Tree Division Activities
During the month of September, 900 trees were trimmed, 48 trees were planted, 1 tree
was removed with Commission approval, 23 Ficus trees were removed, and 6
emergency tree calls were responded to. The Urban Forester received 86 tree
. maintenance requests.
1. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program
with the Concrete Maintenance Supervisor and a Public Works Inspector. This
work involved the Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to
sidewalk repairs.
2. The annual tree trimming continues throughout the City. All Coral, Palm,
Eucalyptus. These trees will be trimmed as part of the annual tree- trimming
program to avoid potential damage during the winter storm season.
3. The attached Tree Activity Report summarizes requests and field activities
performed during the past three months.
