M • Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) , Page 2 January 6, 2004 c RECREATION SERVICES To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Andrea McGuire, Recreation Superintendent Re: Recreation Division Monthly (November & December) Activities Report ADULT SPORTS Co -Ed and Men's Softball - The spring adult softball league registration closes January 9 with league play scheduled to begin the week of February 2. Approximately 80 teams are expected to register. Fall league play wrapped up in early December. The fields will be given a needed rest and renovation before the spring league calls "batter up" in early February. Basketball - Winter adult basketball league registration closed December 5 with 77 beginning play the week of January 5 and concluding in March. The spring league begins immediately following at the end of March. Youth Basketball - This winter, boys and girls grades 3 -8, will have fun while learning basketball fundamentals. The emphasis will be on sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play and, most importantly, fun. Registration began December 1, with league play scheduled to begin on January 18, 2004. Signups were opened for the 7`h and 8th grade division for the first time this year, although signups are slow. Staff has been working with the local intermediate school basketball coaches to recruit players. Registrations for the Tiny League Basketball program for first and second grade athletes are now being accepted. This four week clinic is designed to introduce boys and girls to the game of basketball and are scheduled to begin February 4. YOUTH / TEEN Youth Council - The December Youth Council meeting was highlighted by a visit from Fire Chief Tim Riley with overview of the Newport Beach Fire Department. The meeting also included a discussion on the upcoming Challenge Day scheduled for February 28` which -Mll -focus on reducing oppression in our schools. The meeting finished on a festive note with a White Elephant gift exchange, fun was had by all! 0 Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) Page 3 January 6, 2004 The Youth Council assisted with the Winter Wonderland event on December 7. Council members worked in the snow, carnival games and arts and crafts areas and ran a food booth selling pizza and • drinks as a fund raiser. KidScene - The Mariners, West Newport Community Center and Community Youth Center KidScene after school programs were busy during the end of November and beginning of December preparing backdrops for the 14`h Annual Winter Wonderland event. The backdrops helped to make the event a success. Teen Programming Upcoming Event - The 2 "d Annual Ski and Snowboard Day will take place on Friday, January 301h (a non - student day) with 7`h and 81h grade students heading up to the slopes for a day of fun at Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood. Staff has been busy coordinating the trip in conjunction with the Blue Angels ski and snowboard trip organizers. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! • CONTRACT CLASSES Sailing Program - Recreation Management Services (RMS) has been awarded the opportunity to be the City's new sailing contractor with sailing camps and classes to begin in spring and ongoing through late fatL Contract Instructor Profile - Each month, staff will highlight one of the 70 contract instructors who provide recreational classes for the City. Carole's enjoyment in teaching comes when a light bulb goes off in a student and art is the transforming experience. It's that revelatory encountering which opens dimensions within and makes a difference. AQuATICs • Aquatics Report - Adult lap swim numbers are down as the weather has been chilly and everyone is preparing for the holidays. Rental revenue received from Pacific Coast Aquatics and European Water Polo. Newport Harbor High School Pool is still down and now scheduled to open in the New Year. MBAC will be closed for tap swim on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1, 2004. Featured Special Event Permits: • CNB HWinter Wonderland - December 7, 2003 • Balboa Island Home Tour - December 7, 2003 • BIIA Tree Lighting - December 13, 2003 • CdM Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk - December 14, 2003 Facility Rentals During the period of November 15, 2003 through December 15, 2003 there were: • 12 Picnic /Park Area Rentals • 22 Room Rentals • 4 Field Rentals • 3 Gymnasium Rentals PARK PATROL Park Patrol Rangers Craig Brown and Sam Rodriguez attended training through the Police Department and completed the required course that allows them to carry pepper spray while on duty. Additionally, they were certified in First Aid and CPR. During this period they assisted in the following areas: • Prevented vehicles from driving on park grass /fields • Monitored and prevented the use of athletic fields during several days of rain • Advised various persons that private tennis instruction is not permitted on public courts • Stopped illegal underage youth from drinking alcohol at Irvine Terrace Park • Monitored the use and security of City parks and facilities -- - - -- • Alerted General Services of defective sprinkler systems in several parks • Monitored the compliance with Special Event Permit conditions • Assisted contract instructors with gaining access to facilities • Reported and gathered evidence of a vandalism at Arroyo Park • Monitored and advised park visitors of the City's leash law i 0 t n LJ • Monthly Activities Report Page 5 • Reported a drunk adult to the Police at Carroll Beek Community Center • Issued multiple warnings for illegal parking in handicapped parking spaces • Removed various illegally posted signs from park and other public property FACILITY / PARK REPAIRS • Lawn Bowling Center - A new door was installed at the restroom. • Community Youth Center - Carpet repairs are being arranged. • Bonita Creek - Closet doors are being ordered. • West Newport Community Center - Electrical problems were Department. • Cliff Drive Park - The retaining walls were poured in mid December and project completion is anticipated for the end of January. • Court Inspections /Repair - In November/ December, staff inspected tennis, basketball, and handball courts for safety and is working on securing bids to complete the court repairs in late January or early February. • 2003 Facility Inspections Summary is attached. SPECIAL EVENTS Winter Wonderland - (Item 3) January 6, 2004 repaired by the Utilities holiday breakfast. In addition, Santa visited many holiday parties during the annual Newport Harbor Boat parade. Tournament of Roses Parade - IT'S A SELL -OUT! - It's official!! ALL 135 tickets for the Tournament of Roses Parade excursion have been sold. Three bus will be loaded with early risers heading up to Pasadena on New Years morning to catch the Grand Daddy of all Parades! Monthly Activities Report Page 6 OTHER NEws New Part -time Staff - Staff hired Sarah Boulton (left) as the Marketing Specialist. Sarah has a background in public relations and marketing. She comes to us from American Suzki Motors, where she cooridnated there public relations. Sarah will oversee the production of the Navigator, designing marketing materials and the Department webpage. Bernadette Rosselit (right) began December 1, as a Office Assistant to replace Jaleah Duarte who moved to Ohio. (Item 3) January 6, 2004 Youth Sports Commission The Youth Sports Commission met on December 4 to allocate field usage for the spring 2004 season and discuss issues related to field use in Newport Beach. The member organizations (AYSO 57 Et 97, JAAF, NBLL, NHBA, Pony, PCGFP) are still experiencing growth in their leagues which continues to compound issue of too little field space for the existing demand. i Monthly Activities Report (Item 3) Page 7 January 6, 2004 SENIOR SERVICES To: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission From: Celeste Jardine -Haug, Senior Services Manager Re: Senior Services Monthly Activities Report EVENTS AT THE OASIS SENIOR CENTER • The holiday kick off event was a Wine Tasting party on December 10 and included wine, hors d'oeuvres and music. • The Pancake Breakfast was especially fun this month as Santa made a visit. This event is held the second Saturday of every month beginning at 7:30am, $3 for adults and $1 for children. Everyone is welcome at this monthly event. • Human Services Coordinator Vicki Chin planned many charitable giving activities that Center members were able to participate in, such as: • A toy drive to benefit the many children affected by the fires and have been delivered to St. Vincent de Paul in San Diego. • Canned goods were collected and distributed to SOS for the Adopt -A- Family program. • Lap Robes were knitted to give to residents at local nursing homes and to homebound seniors. • Knitted hats were collected and given to SPIN (Serving People in Need) who distributed them to the homeless in this area. • A special gift was delivered to the Centers own homebound members who were alone for the holidays • The Girl Scout Troop came and joined our lunch group and sang carols for them on December 22 and with the Ukulele group that afternoon. TRANSPORTATION The transportation system is back up and running with a full fleet of four vehicles as one of the drivers has been out on disability for three months, which has created a very busy schedule for the remaining drivers. Office staff members have been filling in when needed to get seniors to their appointments.
