HomeMy WebLinkAbout09 - Correspondence - HVCA - volleyball courts @ Buffalo Hills Park0 • CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH RECREATION & SENIOR SERVICES Marie Knight, Director December 16, 2003 Harbor View Community Association c/o Jill Schwalbe Villageway Management, Inc. PO Box 4708 Irvine, CA 92616 Dear Ms. Schwalbe: I received your letter dated December 2, regarding the volleyball court in Buffalo Hills Park. Although I appreciate your second request, the facts remain the same. The volleyball court was removed at the request of the Harbor View Community Association to make way for an expansion of the pool. Public hearings were held at both the Parks, Beaches ft Recreation Commission and the subsequent City Council meeting in 1997. These meetings were an opportunity for residents who may have opposed the removal of the court to come forward and voice their opposition. At that time there was strong support for the removal of the courts. Since the removal of the court in 1997, the two letters from you are the only requests received for replacing the volleyball court. There appears to be no demand for this activity in the park. We understand that use of parks and preferences do change over time. However, the City is not inclined to change the amenities and make up of the park as the Association Board changes its position. There are nearly 70 beach volleyball courts stretched from Corona del Mar to the river jetty in Newport Beach. These courts are available for players who bring their own net. There are no other parks in our community that have volleyball courts as we feel that the number offered along the beach more than meets the needs of the community. Buffalo Hills Park has two playgrounds, several fields and a basketball court and with the new Bonita Canyon Sports Park offering the addition of tennis, we feel there are sufficient amenities offered. Although your correspondence is appreciated, there are no plans to add a sand volleyball court in Buffalo Hills Park at this time. If you have any additional questions please call me at 949 - 644.3151. Sincerely, 6)V Andrea K. In 1998 prior to the construction and expansion of the Harbor View Community Association Pool, 1854 Port Westboume, there was a sand volleyball court located adjacent to the pool and clubhouse in the Buffalo Hills Park. During the expansion of the pool and the installation of the new playground equipment the volleyball court was removed. Therefore, the Board of Directors would like to again request that the City reinstall the sand volleyball court next to the clubhouse behind the City restrooms. Please advise the undersigned regarding your response to the above request as soon as possible. Your time and effort is appreciated.
