One Commission approved tree donated by SPON was planted at Bayview Park. . 2. Hydroseeding occurred at Castaways Park as scheduled in the Revegetation Project. Once the plants germinate, they will provide color, texture and density to the Park this spring. 3. During December, the Public Works and General Services Departments received a Project of the Year award for revegetation of Castaways Park from the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association. The Chapter includes Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. 4. Park Maintenance Division staff provided traffic control and delineation for the first Orange County Marathon that was routed through the cities of Newport Beach and Irvine. Parks Maintenance Division staff reported to work at 3:30 am, and completed the event at 3:00 pm. It was a long, but very safe and successful first time event. 5. The new landscaped median on MacArthur Boulevard, just north of Jamboree Road, was completed and assumed by the City for maintenance. 6. A dozen Toyon trees were planted at Bonita Creek Park to screen the youth sports storage bins located at the east side of the Park. 7. Park and Field Maintenance Divisions staff coordinated improvements with the Recreation Department at Irvine Terrace Park, consisting of new walkways, a picnic table pad, and shade structure, and new playground equipment. • • Upcoming Activities for January 1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide. 2. Parks Maintenance Division staff will continue coordinating the control of rodents with contract services. Tree Division Activities During the month of November, 1218 trees were trimmed, 50 trees were removed as Problem Trees —Phase II per the G -1 Policy, 3 trees were removed per Commission approved reforestation, 23 trees were planted, 55 trees were root pruned, and 11 emergency tree calls were responded to. The Urban Forester received 160 tree maintenance requests. 1. The City's tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, is currently grid trimming trees within the Corona Del Mar area. During the month of December, 895 trees were trimmed, 9 trees were removed as claim/general liability related that were approved by the City Manager, 110 trees were removed per a Commission approved reforestation within the Cameo Community Association, 3 trees were planted, 95 trees were root pruned, and 37 emergency tree calls were responded to as a result of a • severe rain and wind storm of December 28 - 29. 1. The City's tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, continues to grid trim trees within the Corona Del Mar area. 2. Since July 2004, under City Council direction and funding, staff has undertaken an extensive root pruning effort. Combined efforts of the Field Maintenance and Tree Maintenance Divisions and West Coast Arborists staff, have resulted in the root pruning of 400 trees to date. This effort will mitigate any potential property damage as a result of City tree roots and also provide for tree longevity in the Urban Forest. The extensive work included root pruning, root barrier installation, and hardscape repairs at each tree site. 3. The attached Tree Activity Report summarizes requests and field activities performed during the past month. 4. The General Services Department staff used their expertise, knowledge, and equipment as a means to improve the health to 13 Mexican Fan Palms located on Coast Highway in Mariners Mile. The palms have performed poorly during the past year as a result of methane gas intrusion into the adjacent soil and roots. A report conducted by Wallace Soil Laboratories, as well as other consultants, advised staff to remove the existing soil, backfill with #16 sand, and install vent tubes. • 5. As a result of the removal of 172 trees over the past 2 months, 217 trees, 24" boxed trees are scheduled to be planted by West Coast Arborists, commencing January 3. This will significantly mitigate the recent street tree loss. 6. As directed by the City Council and the City Manager, staff identified a list of trees throughout Newport Beach as Problem Trees per the criteria of the G -1 Policy. These • trees had a repeated history of damaging public and private property despite specific treatment by City staff to alleviate repeated damage. Problem Trees — Phase 1 (31 trees) Westcliff area and Phase 2 (50) Corona del Mar area were reviewed and approved by the City Manager and each respective City Councilperson after an extensive field tour. It is anticipated that Phase 3 will include 65 trees for removal and will be primarily in the Eastbluff area.
