YOUTH PROGRAMS
• Aquatics — Swim lessons at Newport Harbor High School concluded August 18. Lap swim will continue
to take place at NHHS, and our Junior Water Polo -will continue to work out at Costa Mesa High
School until MBAC reopens sometime in the middle of September. With the pool closure at MBAC,
Newport Beach Aquatics Club Youth Swim Team took a break this summer, but plans to start back
up this fall. Many of the participants joined the Newport Beach Jr. Lifeguard program during the
summer months, which doesn't allow for much time to commute in- between Junior Guards and
swim team practice.

MBAC renovation: As of Wednesday, August 15, construction
workers were laying the the on the bottom and on the sides
of the pool for the 50M & 25M lanes. Grating was taking place
around the pit and appeared they were only a few steps away
from pouring the concrete deck. MBAC is scheduled to
reopen the second week of September.
DAY CAMP PROGRAM
Summer Day Camp
Swim Lessons - The Aquatics staff was busier than
ever this summer at Newport Harbor High School Pool.
MBAC's renovation project raised participant numbers
to an all time high. Nearly one thousand swimmers
took private and group lessons in only eight weeks.
Swim Lessons generated $44,621. 84 residents enjoyed
the 45 -foot inflatable fun run for the last time on
August 10. The night ended with hamburgers, chips,
drinks, and roasted marshmallows. Congratulations to
the 2007 summer aquatics staff for making this
summer one the City's best!
It was a great summer in Newport Beach at the City Staffed Summer Day
Camp. Ninety children per week ages 6 to 12 enjoyed arts and crafts,
boogie boarding, building sandcastles, kayaking, sports, tournaments, and
play. In addition, campers have enjoyed science experiments, riding roller
coasters, taking photos with Mickey Mouse and Snoopy, tubing down a lazy
river, and watching sporting events during excursions to local destinations.
Summer Day Camp this year was at an all time high, with eight out of the
ten weeks completely full and a total of 837 participants enrolled between the two sites, which
kept the Recreation Leaders busy. Additionally, the camp concluded August 31 with a combined
total of 47 participants remaining on the waitlist.

y. Re istraii°on opened for the after school program. In an effort to
meet the needs of the community, the Kidscene After School
program has been revamped and renamed to ACTIVE Kidz After
School. As part of the re- construction, the program is avaitable to
youth in grades Kindergarten through Sixth and additional
enrichment programs will be implemented as part of the
program. Enrichment programs will include nutrition, fitness and
sports, music, theater, and an intergenerational program with the OASIS Senior
Center. Staff met with the principals at Newport Heights, Mariners, and Harbor View
Schools week of August 20. With all the changes, Recreation Leaders attended
training on August 28 and Meet Et Greets were held August 29 and September 12.
Counselor In Training
The Counselor In Training program, designed for teens to gain valuable
work experience has proven to be beneficial for the teens, the program,
and for the Recreation Leaders. Two former Counselors In Training who
volunteered three summers were hired as Recreation Leaders during
Summer Day Camp. In addition, it has been a great opportunity for the
Recreation Leaders to take on the role of a mentor training our future
Leaders.

Additional Information: The past few years we have had continuous problems with homeless
persons living behind and in the landscaping at Channel Place Park. We frequently find
• alcohol and other dangerous items in the bushes at this location. We met with our General
Services staff and came up with a plan to prevent this. The landscaping was changed to
provide a more open atmosphere that has proven less attractive to the homeless community
resulting in a safer environment for park users. This month we also received numerous
complaints from residents near 38`" Street Park regarding dogs in the park being off leash
and owners not picking up after them. We posted additional signs in the park warning dog
owners to obey the leash laws and reminding them to pick up after their dogs. Additionally,
we increased the number of patrols of this location by out Park Patrol Officers and made the
PD's Animal Control Officer's aware of the situation. The signage and increased patrols
seem to have resolved the problem.
SPECIAL EVENTS PERMITS
As of August 15, 2007, 175 Special Event Permits were processed and issued for the year. Those
events of note for this period are:

PROJECTS AND MISCELLANEOUS
Bonita Canyon Sports Park Benches - The aluminum bench slats that were stolen prior to the start
of the Spring Youth Baseball season were replaced on August 16. Thanks again to the General
Services Department for fabricating wood replacements to hold us over until the new materials
were received. In addition, as a preventative measure GS staff has tack welded all of our aluminum
bleachers throughout the City to keep them from walking off again!

Newport Coast Community Center - Staff has been hard at work preparing to take occupancy and
• organizing the Grand Opening Weekend. On September 15 at 10am the Dedication and Ribbon
Cutting will take place along with the Flavor of Newport Coast as part of the festivities. -On Sunday
the celebration wilt continue with a Sunday FunDay in the Park with live music, food, games and
tours of the building! A big thanks to all the departments who have been pitching in to help get the
doors open. Honorable mention this month are the Parks staff, Purchasing staff and Sign Shop Staff.
Benches at Mariners Park - Recreation and General Services staff combined efforts to have two
benches installed at Mariners Park adjacent to the new 2 -5 year old play area. The benches were
an instant success and are receiving use all day long as the Mariners Playground is one of the
busiest in the City!
Balboa Community Center Painted - The newly
painted Balboa Community Center looks
rejuvenated and brand new! During the past
month the building was painted a deep ocean
blue with a cocoa brown trim to give the building
a Newport Beach experience! The improvement
project was much needed as the building was
looking a little rusty.

Re: Senior Services Division Monthly Activities Report
Transportation - Transportation Supervisor Susie Macgregor and Senior Services Manager Celeste
Jardine -Haug met with Hoag Hospital Community Medicine to discuss the transportation program
and areas in which the program could help more clients and the possibility of a contracted program
to support the busier days so no senior is under served. Pricing and details of how this would work
are currently being researched.
New Building - The OASIS Fundraising Committee has invited local HOA Leaders to view the
preliminary plans for the new center and to provide them with the opportunity to voice any
concerns or suggestions. Former President Ed Romeo requested that they keep their members
informed on the project by posting information in their newsletters. The committee is working hard
to insure that this project is neighbor friendly and does not impact the community. This meeting
was just the first of many meeting to keep the community informed. A letter has also been mailed
to HOA's within the City with information about the project and an invitation to the October 6
event.
Classes - Summer Coastline College classes ended in early August for a short summer break. The
classes return for the fall term to offer more classes then ever before. Staff has scheduled 19
classes, four of which will be held at the Newport Coast Community Center. These new classes
include Food and Nutrition, Oil Painting, Collage of Artists, and Film and Literature and are free of
charge.
Newport Coast Classes - We are excited to be offering classes up at the Newport Coast Community
Center as well and will closely monitor the enrollment to assess the needs in the community. OASIS
staff will work closely to orient the staff at the Center about the needs of seniors and how to refer
them back to OASIS when needed.
Medical Lecture - UCI Gerontologist Dr. Kerry Burnight lectured on "Aging Brilliantly." It was an
interactive lecture discussing groundbreaking gerontological research from the Harvard Longitudinal
Study of Aging.
Hiking Group - Trail Trekkies began by taking a group hike in Abso Canyon led by volunteer Shelly
Dobkins. This group meets once a month with new hike routes. The next hike is Casper Regional
Park on September 12.
