NCCC Tables & Chairs
Although Newport Coast Community Center was
closed from August 30 thru September 12 for
electrical work and painting, staff was hard at work
accomplishing tasks difficult to complete when
classes are in session. Staff power washed over 50
classroom tables and 300 chairs in preparation for
the new fall season of classes that began in
September. Other tasks included a thorough cleaning
of the gymnasium bleachers, door threshold repairs,
and cleaning and disinfecting gymnastics mats.
CYC INTERIOR DOOR HARDWARE COMPLETED
Over the past year, the Community Youth Center (CYC) was
transformed from a quiet, hidden building, to a beautiful and bustling
community center. The building has undergone a complete renovation
from the inside out, creating new office space, classroom, and
reception area. New door hardware was installed throughout the
building replacing the pre - existing, twenty year old hardware. Thus
creating a safer, more secure facility.
BUCK GULLY PROGRAM
The Recreation & Senior Services Department partnered with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy to
create Open Space Programs, which allow residents to gain access to one of Newport's best kept
secrets. Buck Gully is a natural, coastal canyon that occurs within the City of Newport Beach.
The canyon is teeming with plants and wildlife. Exploring Buck Gully is yet another tribute to
the diverse beauty of Newport Beach. Join us on an exploration hike through Buck Gully on one
of the dates listed below. To register for a program, go to http://www.irlandmarks.org/activities

POOL LIFEGUARD SAVES LIFE WHILE ON FAMILY VACATION
While vacationing with his family in Yellowstone National Park, Pool Lifeguard Elliot Waniek
responded to a woman crying out for help. An elderly man had collapsed and was unconscious
just a few rooms down the hall. Elliot responded quickly, evaluated the situation, and performed
CPR until EMS arrived on the scene about 10 minutes later and airlifted the victim to a hospital.
Elliot was later informed that the man suffered a stroke and was probably alive because of his
swift response and training in first aid. As a result of Elliot's heroic deed, the hotel provided free
hotel rooms for the length of his family's stay.
SCHOOL BEGAN! 1
The ACTIVE Kidz After- School Program began September '7 and is operating daily from school dismissal
to 6pm. ACTIVE Kidz is designed for youth in grades K- 6a' grade. Daily activities include homework
assistance, arts and crafts, computer lab and non - competitive games! Families are enjoying a new
calendar format of themed days throughout the year. All sites are currently working to maximize
registration by attending Back to School Night this week and working to build a collaborative
relationship with the principals and teachers at the schools served.
For the even younger age group, Pre - School io1 began on September 13 at Mariners Library and
Newport Coast Community Center. Registration filled to capacity in all 4 classes before the end of
August! The fall trimester will run through mid - December with planned activities teaching participants
numbers and letters. Art, music, and creative arts will help them prepare for Kindergarten! Both sites
are ably supervised by Senior Recreation Leaders Kristen Aguirre and Megan Hanley.
FALL ADULT SPORTS UPDATE
Fall season adult sports are alive and well in Newport Beach. Basketball season tipped off the week of
September 13 with 66 teams competing in tt different leagues. Community Centers at West Newport
and Newport Coast, in addition to the Lincoln Athletic Center Gym and Ensign's Junior High School
gym are hosting all the action.
The outdoor sports of coed soccer and softball are also burning up the playing fields. Forty-one coed
adult a on ii soccer teams are competing in four divisions on the fields of Newport Beach. The City's
coed soccer league is widely observed to be the largest coed soccer league in Califomia! Fifty-eight
softball teams also round out the outdoor adult sports leagues. Games are played until iopm weekdays
for both soccer and softball. Game sites include Arroyo Park, Bonita Creek Park, Lincoln Athletic
Center, and CYC /Grant Howald Park.
FOUR PLAYGROUNDS RESURFACED
General Contractor R E. Schultz Construction and Tot Turf completed the resurfacing of four parks,
including West Newport Community Center, Eastbluff, San Miguel and Bayview. The contractor
completed the work within a week and each of the playgrounds were closed down for 2 -3 days each. In
addition to the resurfacing, the playground equipment at Eastbluff Park received a facelift, with a new
tot playhouse and new climbing, play panels and shade roofs attached to the playground structure. The
surfacing was also extended to the swings to meet ADA compliance. All four park playgrounds are a bit
cheerier now, due to the brightly colored surfaces! Special thanks to Public Works for their assistance
with the projects!
MARINE PROTECTION & EDUCATION ADOPTION
The Recreation Division is pleased to announce that they have adopted
Marine Protection and Education from Harbor Resources — and a great
match it is! Recreation Manager Janet Cates is working with Marine
Protection Supervisor Michelle Clemente to develop short- and long -term
plans for the tidepools and the Back Bay Science Center. Trips down to
Michelle's "office by the sea" at Big Corona beach, to the little Corona
tidepools and to the Back Bay Science Center have been educational and eye
opening! Michelle was introduced to her fellow supervisors recently at the
Science Center and to the entire department at the quarterly meeting held at
the new OASIS Senior Center. Laura Detweiler, Sean Levin and Janet Cates also attended Michelle's bi-
monthly staff meeting and met the Marine Naturalist Interpreters (formerly Tidepool Rangers)
Michelle Clemente at the tidepools
CARROLL BEEK COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT
Recreation staff met with the Balboa Island Improvement Association (BIIA) to update them on the
Carroll Beek Community Center remodel project. Discussion included colors /projects materials,
construction timeline, and plans for the community center when it re- opens. Discussion items included:
• Recreation staff will be working with California State University, Long Beach students from the
Recreation and Leisure Studies Department, to create a survey for Balboa Island to gage what
types of programming they desire at the community center.
• BIIA and the City will partner together to do an "Open House" pancake breakfast in March 2011,
to showcase the remodeled facility and expanded program offerings.
• BIIA and the City will partner on marketing the online program survey, grand re- opening of the
center and programming through the BIIA's The Island Bridge.
• BIIA requested City staff to address concerns regarding the basketball court signage. Staff will
update the signage and place a new basketball backboard before the community center re- opens.

OASIS SENIOR CENTER — OPEN
The move into the new facility was a challenge at best, but it was done with great success. The
staff and Friends offices are together as the Center construction and finishing touches are being
completed. We had our soft opening on September 20 and our grand re- opening celebration is
scheduled for October 9 at 2 -5Pm.
New staff began work September 7 and we have put them through many trainings so that they
were ready for the onslaught of customers on September 20. We have a great crew who are
excited and enthusiastic about their new jobs and the facility. Everyone is pitching in to do
whatever is needed. Thanks to the great work of our HR Department who made the hiring
process a great experience and to our IT Division who is working around the clock to get us up
and running to serve the public.
