AFTER- SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS A SUCCESS!
The City collaborated with the Mariners School PTA and the Newport Elementary School Foundation to
operate after - school enrichment classes for this past school year. The schools, parents and City staff were
pleased with the first years' numbers of participation (see below).
Staff contracted with instructors to develop class courses on a quarterly basis. Programs included a variety of
classes such as Zumba, Pop Star Sing & Dance, Cooking, Science, Spanish, Surf, Tennis, Tae Kwon Do,
Computers, Engineering, Golf, Basketball, Music, Yoga, Hip -Hop, Chess, Homework Club, and more!
Staff is working with both school sites to organize and market the program for the 2012 -13 school year.

SUMMER PART -TIME STAFF TRAINING
To ensure that Summer Day Campers have an outstanding, safe and memorable summer, 26 Recreation
Leaders, including 6 new hires, went through over 15 hours of training recently which included:
• Autism training
• Annual CPR /First Aid and AED. Thanks to our instructor Park Patrol officer Mike Farris, who is
also a Retired Sheriffs Deputy
• Policies and Procedures with Teen Leader volunteers
• Pairing 12 Teen Leaders to work together as a team and prepared them for the first day of camp.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CDM SCENIC .9;K
Saturday, June 2nd dawned cool and cloudy — perfect weather for the 31� Annual Corona del Mar Scenic
5K! The co -hosts of the event, the Recreation & Senior Services Department and the Corona del Mar
Chamber of Commerce thank everyone involved in producing the event: the Police, Fire and Municipal
Operations departments for their set up and clean up of cones, barricades, signs, inspections, etc; to GIS
for wonderful new maps; to Mayor Gardner and PB &R Vice Chair Hamilton for starting the races; and to
Recreation staff for coordinating supplies, registrations, equipment and fielding all the phone calls!
The event ran smoothly with volunteers and staff keeping the course safe! The ever popular Restaurant
Row featured delicacies supplied by 10 of CdM's finest restaurants. More than one participant was
overheard remarking on the beauty of the scenery, the new dri -fit nylon runner shirts, and the wonderful
breakfast, with many promising to come back next year.
The race was well attended with 2,000 participants. They came from 18 different states and also from
Ottowa, Canada. After a few weeks of rest, the Run Committee will begin work on the 32nd Annual Corona
del Mar Scenic 5K on Saturday, June 1, 2013. Mark your calendars now!
NEWPORT BEACH TRACK STARS SHINE AT SCMAF TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Track & Field program concluded an impressive season with the running of the annual Southern
California Municipal Athletic Federation ( SCMAF) Track & Field Championship Meet held at Warren High
School in Downey. Over 1,o87 participants from over 40 cities around the Southland participated in this
culminating event.
The road to qualify for the SCMAF meet was not easy, as participants had to fast qualify by finishing in the
top four in their event at the City of Newport Beach - Newport Balboa Rotary Club -Frank E. Andersen Meet
of Champions held April 20. Qualifying participants moved on to the Orange County - SCMAF Meet, held in
May and the top four the qualified to move on to the SCMAF finals.
Approximately 220 of these 1,087 participants were from SCMAF- Orange County. About 50 Newport
Beach participants of the 220 from SCMAF- Orange County competed against the very best "elite" Track
and Field athletes, ranging in age from 7 to 15 years old. Newport Beach participants shined brightly with
over 20 receiving medals by finishing in the top five of their event.

Thanks to Recreation Supervisor Scott Williamson, Recreation Leaders Stephanie Nealey, Eston Greub and
Ethan Machado, and longtime sports official Lou Michelson for their work at the event.
MARINE PROTECTION RECEIVES KIDS KUDOS
Marne Naturalist Interpreter Betsy Thompson conducted a school tour at the end of June in the Little

YOUTH SPORTS COMMISSION MEETS FOR FALL 2012 & FIELD ALLOCATION
On Wednesday, June 13, representatives from Youth Sports Commission (AYSO Regions 57 and 97,
Newport Beach Little League, Newport Harbor Baseball Association, and Newport Mesa Girls Softball) and
Club organizations (Newport Mesa Soccer Club, Slammers, Pacific Soccer Club, Jr. All American Football,
the Batrays and Boys Lacrosse ) met with Recreation and Parks staff and Parks Beaches and Recreation
Commissioners Anderson and Englebrecht for their bi- annual meeting to discuss current sports topics and
receive their field allocation for the upcoming fall season.
Meeting agenda items included proposed modifications to the $io /participant field maintenance fee.
Each organization is currently meeting with Recreation and Parks staff to determine how their collected
funds will be spent during the next fiscal year. These funds assist the Parks division in maintaining the
high quality sports fields which the groups take pride in.
Other topics of interest included an update on the Sunset Ridge Park project, field improvement projects for the
summer renovation season including the proposed booster pump for the Lincoln sports fields and various
policies.
CAMP FRIENDSHIP
During the month of July, Recreation Staff have been working with Newport Mesa Unified School District
( NMUSD) at Summer Camp Friendship! This great camp offers autistic children in the NMUSD the
opportunity to make new friends, learn the ways of social interaction, and enjoy games and crafts. Through
this partnership, Recreation Leaders work with school district staff to assist in conducting themed
activities and games at the camp. In turn, the school district sends certified advisors to train staff on
working with autistic children in the community and throughout city programs. This is an excellent camp
and the Recreation Department is excited to be involved in Camp Friendship!

AQUATICS
The City's Aquatics program is getting ready for a busy 8 weeks! With 57o registrations (250 more than
last year in the same period) enrolled in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program, the staff of 30
pool lifeguards and swim instructors are participating in extensive training. In order to get prepared to
teach lessons ranging from infants to adults, aquatic staff attended several trainings in June, such as;
autism training led by the Newport-Mesa School District staff; an in- service training focusing on
CPR /AED /First Aid and lifeguarding skills; a seminar on how to teach special needs students taught by a
credentialed Special Education teacher; a customer service class; and how to fine tune their teaching skills
from a national American Red Cross trainer.

SUMMER DAY CAMP
Over 200 children have spent a memorable summer with us so far and enjoyed great trips, new friends, and exciting
activities! Summer Day Camp allows parents to choose from the Community Youth Center camp in Corona del Mar
or Balboa Community Center camp on the Balboa Peninsula. Campers take a weekly excursion to a local theme park
or sporting event, and biweekly walking excursions to CdM State Beach for CYC campers or daily beach activities on
the Peninsula for Balboa campers
INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE EVENTS AT MARINERS PARK &
THE BALBOA PENINSULA
The City in partnership with the Mariners Elementary School Foundation hosted
the 401h Annual Independence Day Parade and Celebration at Mariners
Park. The Parade took place on Mariners Drive at 10:3oam and culminated with
a celebration from 11:3oam -2pm at Mariners Park. Live music, food, carnival
games, arts and crafts and other activities were provided for families and their
children. Over 3000 residents attended this annual patriotic event!
The 2nd Annual 4th is for Families Bike /Dog Parade & Festival took place
on the Balboa Peninsula. The bike and dog parade began at gam at 38th Street
Park and ended with a free festival from 9:30- 11:3oam at Channel Place Park
The festival included bouncers, carnival games, food, giant slides, dunk tank, and
arts & crafts. Over 20oo residents took part in this 2nd annual event. Special
thanks to Mayor Gardner, Councilmember Henn and City Manager Dave Kiff for
sitting in the dunk tank on what was an overcast morning! The largest thanks go
to our volunteer committee who helped plan and organize the event.
Kudos to Municipal Operations, Fire and Police for providing services that made both events safe and
successful. _
USA WOMEN'S WATER POLO
Corona del Mar High School and the City of Newport Beach hosted the USA Women's Water Polo vs. Hungary
game on July 8. The USA Women's team won 9 -4 in front of a crowd of i,000 spectators. The game was
broadcasted live on NBC, and was the last of four games the team played against Hungary in Southern
California before each team heads to London for the Summer Olympics. Team USA won all 4 games.
Special thanks to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District maintenance staff, the Recreation Department's
Dan Villanueva and Aquatics Staff for making the pool and pool deck sparkle! Good luck, Team USA!
PARK PATROL
John Cataldo was appointed as a Park Patrol Officer in June. John lives in the City of Orange and comes with
many years of experience working as a Park Ranger, Parking Control Officer, and Code Enforcement Officer for
other local municipalities. John has joined a team of talented experienced staff and we are confident that he
will do a great job serving the community.
Park Patrol Officer's have had a busy summer to date with the parks and beaches around the City experiencing
large crowds. The Park Patrol Officers focus is educating beach visitors at Corona del Mar beach regarding the
rules and regulations for tents, barbeques, glass containers and alcohol.
July 4th proved to be a busy day as expected with people lined up at tam to secure beach amenities. Park Patrol
Officer's Mike Ferris and John Cataldo worked and spent the day educating and ensuring the safety of the
beach visitors at CDM Beach. Since Memorial Day weekend, Park Patrol enforcement contacts with the public
at CDM Beach have been:

ACTIVITIES AT THE OASIS
Events - OASIS hosted Thanksgiving in June on June 22. The meal was sponsored by PIMCO, and the
entertainment was sponsored by Let's Share Inc, a foundation formed by PIMCO employees. The
donations were made to Age Well Senior Services, a non -profit organization that provides our meals
program.
Health Screenings - Two free health screenings were offered at OASIS on July 18. In the morning, Oral
Cancer screening was provided by a Registered Dental Hygienist. This screening is quick and non - invasive
and important since 25% of oral cancer cases occur in people who do not smoke and have no other risk
factors. In the afternoon, a Stroke Awareness Lecture and Carotid Artery Screenings was provided by the
OC Stroke Association and the Roxanna Todd Hodges Foundation.
Knee Replacement Lecture- On July 11 Dr. Alan Beyer, MD, Hoag Hospital Orthopedic Surgeon
discussed arthritis of the knee, the latest treatment options for improved comfort and activity, and key
information about knee replacement surgery.
Memory Programs - On July 25, Katie Zeoli, Community Health Educator from Alzheimer's Family
Services presented Alzheimer's Disease: Common myths, facts and reasons for hope. The discussion
included the latest information on current treatments and research and how people can lower their risk for
developing Alzheimer's or other types of dementia.
OASIS Revenue for FY 12 - Because of successful
programming revenue has increased from the previous fiscal year
by $218,222. The total revenue at the close of FY 12 was $739,415•
Interest in facility rentals continues to increase and held its first
courtyard wedding this past weekend. This increase in revenue
will certainly help to offset the cost of running the Center.
Transportation Program - - - - - - -- The OASIS transportation program has a new vehicle in its fleet — a 2012
Toyota Venza for medical appointments, trips to the grocery store,
classes and events at the Center.
OASIS staff chose the Venza, because of easy access, spacious leg room
and large storage area in the back for walkers and groceries. Vehicles are
replaced after 8 years or 8o,000 miles through the Cit} s vehicle
replacement program. The current OASIS fleet consists of 3 para- transit buses equipped with wheel chair
lifts, a sedan and the new Venza, which is a "Crossover" vehicle. During FY 11/12, the program provided
over 15,000 rides to the residents of Newport Beach who are over 6o and unable to drive.
OASIS Sailing Club -_ The OASIS Sailing Club definitely sets the
Senior Center apart from others in California. Not many Centers own two
yachts that go sailing almost 35o days a year. The club is very strong with
12o active participants. In the past two years, the leadership of the group
has developed very stringent policies and procedures for certifying
skippers and mates. This has helped that the program runs smooth and
safely. City Manager Dave Kiff and Director Laura Detweiler recently took
a sail to inspect the program and to learn more about the programs
operation.
Happy Customer - The following letter was received:
Dear Marci - Thank you for sending us the picture of Jerry's little frog sculpture, he
was so pleased you sent it. My father -in -law loves taking the sculpture class with
Nancy, as she has made him feel welcome and supported. Art has always been such an
important part of Jerry's life, it makes me happy that he has the opportunity to create
and express himself again.
Since the onset of Jerry's nerve disease y years ago he has lost much of his
independence, but being able to attend class at the OASIS Senior Center has given him
an opportunity to be independent and to socialize, much needed morale and mental
health boosters. We are grateful to the City of Newport Beach for providing this
beautiful and thoughtfully designed facility to the seniors of Newport Beach.

Friends of OASIS - The annual election of the Friends Board took place with seven positions up for
grabs. The results included five incumbents and two new board members being elected. The incumbents
are Nancy Acone, Walt Howald, Scott Paulsen, Ed Romeo, and Mimi Shapiro and the new members
include John Carroll and Hugh Logan. The executive officers were elected at their June 21st meeting and
installed by Mayor Gardner at the July General Meeting.
The Friends Pancake Breakfast held each month on Saturdays continues to be a popular event with the
community. This program staffed by volunteers both young and old with 15 students from the local schools
help out each month.
Fitness at OASIS - The Fitness Center continues to be busy. The
membership is at igoo now and climbing. The members have complimented
the equipment, but are especially happy with staff and note that staff make
working out a fun experience.
On June 29, Fitness Center Coordinator Just Schmillen held a half day workshop
entitled "Maximize Your Fitness Potential". Bill Morris wellness expert and
Guinness world record holder for the most consecutive sit -ups will be the key
note speaker. Breakout sessions will be held on the following topics:
• Strength Training for Active Seniors
• Successful Aging
• Believe You Can
• Bill's Fitness Secrets
• Food as Medicine
This was a great event for those who love fitness or needed to get motivated to get in shape.
OASIS FITNESS CENTER
The OASIS Fitness Center continues with its success and participation with personal trainers surpasses our
expectations. The Fitness Center staff continues to receive compliments on their great customer service.
Some customers have commented that it is because of the staff that they enjoy the facility so much and
continue to participate.
