coordinated the installation of African Tulip and Date Palm trees. Installation completion
is scheduled for next week, with other enhancement activities to continue.
Recently, the Parks Division coordinated with West Coast Arborists in the installation of
a replacement Mediterranean Fan Palm on Newport Boulevard, just South of Industrial
Road. The replacement was necessitated due to a traffic accident that destroyed the
previous palm. The large, approximately 60 -inch box, specimen was field grown at West
Coast Arborist's wood yard and provided to the City at a discounted, 48 -inch box rate, of
$1,310.00.
Additionally, in the past month, the Parks Division completed the final phase of a
landscape renovation on the Spyglass Hill Road parkways from San Miguel Drive to El
Capitan Drive. Plant materials were selected based on their drought - tolerance, ease of
maintenance, and overall beauty.

As part of the City's overall grid and annual trimming schedule, the City's tree service
contractor pruned trees within the Spyglass Hill and Buffalo Ranch areas. Additionally,
annual pruning palm and coral trees are occurring throughout the City.
The attached Tree Activity Report summarizes requests and field activities performed
during the past months.
Beach Maintenance Activities
Removal of Inlet Guards
Recently, the Storm Drain Maintenance Crew removed 435 inlet guards in front of catch
basins on Balboa Boulevard, Balboa Island, and portions of Coast Highway in West
Newport and Corona Del Mar to minimize the potential for flooding during the
winter /rainy season. The program was implemented ten years ago, and the inlet guards
have proven to be one of the best structural improvements that the City has made in order
to improve water quality and to keep trash and other debris from entering into our harbor
and ocean during the dry spring and summer months.
