HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/14/2012 - City Arts Commission - Approved Minutes City of Newport Beach Newport Beach City Arts Commission Thursday, June 14, 2012 — 5:OOpm Central Library Conference Room Convened at 5:OOpm 1) Call Meeting to Order: Commission vice Chair Robert Smith called the meeting to order and asked staff to take roll call 2) Roll Call: Commissioners Present: Robert Smith, Vice Chair; Gil Lasky; Christopher Trela; Carole Boller, Arlene Greer, Rita Goldberg, Secretary. Commissioners Absent: Robyn Grant Staff Present: Cynthia Cowell, Library Director; Jana Barbier, Cultural Arts Coordinator Public Present: Lynn Wolfe 3) Public Comments: Lynn Wolfe noted her arts background, and that she was attending the Arts Commission meeting just to explore. 4) Approval of Minutes: It was MSP (Boller/Greer) to approve the May 10, 2012 Minutes 5) Current Business: A. Consent Calendar 1. Cultural Arts Activities — Staff provided update 2. Correspondence and Press — Various invitations and announcements that had been received in the cultural arts office were disseminated to the Arts Commission. B. Items for Review and Possible Action - None C. Monthly Reports — 1. Art in Public Spaces/Historical Preservation Committee — Commissioner Smith discussed "Horizons '76", a statue that belongs to the City and is located in the courtyard area of the current City Hall. Commissioner Smith explained that the work was an approximately 7' bronze. He had made inquiries, and the Arts Foundation could possibly finance moving the piece to the new Civic Center. Commissioner Smith offered to check with the architects through City staff to determine possible locations. Additionally, Mr. Smith had received an email from the director of OCMA regarding an indoor sculpture by artist Jay Willis called "Untitled, 1986". The artwork is part of the Deutsche Bank collection and he thought the work looked promising. Commissioner Boller announced that Jay Willis was well-known and had a great bin. Discussion ensued regarding the size and materials of the Jay Willis piece. 2. Fine Arts Committee — Commissioner Greer explained that she and Commissioner Boller, and staff had met with Mr. Mark Hilbert to discuss City space available to exhibit part of the mid-century paintings, particularly of Newport Beach, in his collection. Commissioner Greer had done more work on this opportunity, and noted that several images, including "The Pavilion", by Phil Dike, "Afternoon Splendor in Newport Harbor" and paintings by well-known artists such as George James, Rex Brandt and Roger Koontz could be available. Greer discussed the option of a year-long rotating exhibition but noted that there was nothing yet to move forward on. 3. Performing Arts Committee — Commissioner Goldberg commented on how successful the Jerry Mandel Jazz Band concert was. She thanked Commissioner Trela for all of his work and asked how many people attended. Goldberg commented that the Jerry Mandel Jazz Band had many good musicians. Discussion ensued regarding Shakespeare by the Sea on July 7 and 8, the Bracken Band on July 22 and the U.K. Beat on August 5. 4. Museum Tours - Commissioner Goldberg stated that she is researching museums and is interested in attending an exhibit on Cleopatra at the California Science Center during the first week in October. Commissioner Goldberg thanked Library Director, Cynthia Cowell for asking City Council for an additional $5,000.00 in an expenditure account to pay for museum tours. 5. Arts Foundation Liaison Committee - Commissioner Greer reminded the committee that Saturday was "Art in the Park" at Mariners (1300 Irvine Ave.) from 10:OOam — 5:OOpm. Greer noted that the group was thankful to Chris Trela for creating a Facebook page for the Arts Foundation. Commissioner Greer noted that this would be a fun day, and that they had food vendors. For information on Art in the Park, the email artinthepark(cD-roadrunner.com had been set up. Marie Marston would be having a summer party at her home to wrap up the event. 6. Publicity Committee — Commissioner Trela noted that he had assisted the Arts Foundation with a Facebook page. He hoped that Tom Titus would write about additional upcoming events. 7. Budget Committee — Commissioner Lasky reminded the commission about discussions on museum tours and that Commissioner Grant had asked him to look into this. Commissioners Lasky and Goldberg had met with Library Director, Cynthia Cowell, who offered to request an additional $5,000.00 from City Council, specifically for tours, in Fiscal Year 2012-13. 8. Cultural Arts Grants Committee — Commissioners Greer and Goldberg would be meeting to discuss the criterion for applicants requesting a Cultural Arts Grant. 6) City Arts Commission Announcements or Matters Which Members Would Like Placed on a Future Agenda for Discussion Action or Report Non-Discussion Item — Commissioner Smith asked to discuss a possible donation by Deutsche Bank on a future agenda. 2 Commissioner Greer asked about a mural by Rex Brandt and discussion ensued. Commissioners were not sure if this was a mural that had been discussed in the past. Commissioner Greer would check on whether this was the same image and also request more information from the owner. 7) Public Comments on Non-Agenda Items— None 8) Meeting Adjourned 5:40pm AP proved Minutes Signed by Chair erson; 3
