HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/12/2012 - City Arts Commission - Minutes City of Newport Beach Newport Beach City Arts Commission Thursday, January 12, 2012 – 5:00pm Central Library Conference Room Convened at 5:03pm Call to Order and Roll Call: Commissioners Present: Robyn Grant, Chair; Rita Goldberg, Secretary; Robert Smith, Vice Chair; Gil Lasky; Christopher Trela; Carole Boller, Arlene Greer Commissioners Absent: None Staff Present: Jana Barbier, Cultural Arts Coordinator Public Present: Gigi Valdes, Kerry Rutherford Public Comments: Gigi Valdes and Kerry Rutherford introduced themselves. They own a company that creates murals, commissioned art and design, and consults on color, and were interested in participating in an art project at the new civic center. Arts Commission Chair Robyn Grant thanked them for attending. Discussion ensued as to the process for soliciting public artwork and a budget. Ms. Valdes and Rutherford provided their business cards for staff to keep on file. Approval of Minutes: It was MSP (Greer/Lasky) to approve the November 10, 2011 minutes Committee Reports: Museum Tours Commissioner Goldberg gave a brief update on the museum tour to the Autry National Center on February 16. Visual Arts Commissioner Boller requested that commissioners mark Saturday, April 14 to assist with the 2012 Newport Beach Art Exhibition and Sale. Discussion on specific details for the event including a schedule of activities, update and distribution of the registration form and invitation, means of obtaining further information, wine and food, number of tables required. Boller also discussed the status of the Lenahan collection, meeting with the restorer, staff and Commissioner Greer to select frames. Boller discussed the plan to install the paintings at Oasis on March 1 until April 15. It was suggested that a reception be planned for this installation. Performing Arts Commissioner Goldberg explained to the Commissioners that parks, dates and genres were discussed at a meeting just prior to the Arts Commission meeting. Shakespeare was slated for July 7 and 8 and the Concerts in the Parks were scheduled for July 22 and August 5. Commissioners decided to request Celtic 2 and High School performers’ music. Commissioners asked about a food truck at the concerts and plays. NBAF Commissioner Greer noted that “Pack of Lies” theater performance was slated for February 25th and friends were encouraged to attend. The Foundation had a meeting scheduled at Scape Gallery on March 14. The Art in the Park event was scheduled for June 16 at Mariners Park. Commissioner Greer provided a list of upcoming meetings and events for staff to k eep on file. Art in Public Spaces Commissioner Smith updated the committee on the status of the “Skydivers” sculpture and reminded them that Policy I-11, D-4 states that art that requires restoration can’t be accepted. Commissioner Smith does not recommend going forward with this project to City Council and asked that the item be placed on the agenda again for further action. Publicity Commissioner Trela asked that press releases on current events be sent to him for marketing. Budget Commissioner Lasky indicated that there is $13,701.08 left in the budget through June of 2012. This amount will be needed to fund museum tour(s), Newport Beach Art Exhibition and Sale, and possibly Imagination Celebration. Approximately $6,000 will remain. Commissioners discussed possible uses for these funds. At 6:15 staff had to leave the meeting and Commissioner Goldberg recorded the remainder of the meeting: City Arts Commission Meeting minutes recorded by Rita Goldberg – January 12, 2012 Commissioner Lasky informed the commission of a projected $6,000 surplus in the current year’s budget. Commissioner Smith suggested scheduling a lecture and agreed to follow up with Peter Bohlin. Commissioner Boller said she will contact Steve Bedham to inquire about space in the new City Hall to host the annual art show. Chris Trela brought up the Titanic Anniversary and inquired about scheduling a tie-in event. Commissioner Goldberg suggested adding 2nd and 3rd place prize categories for the art show. The consensus was to move forward with that. Commissioner Boller said she will notify Jana about the change before the flyers go to print. Motion to adjourn was made by Commissioner Greer. Seconded by Commissioner Trela. Meeting adjourned.
