HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/08/2012 - City Arts Commission - MinutesCity of Newport Beach Newport Beach City Arts Commission Thursday, November 8, 2012 – 5:00pm Central Library Conference Room Convened at 5:00pm 1) Call Meeting to Order: Commissioner Boller called the meeting to order. 2) Roll Call: Commissioners Present: Carole Boller, Secretary, Arlene Greer, Gilbert Lasky, Caroline Logan, Christopher Trela Commissioners Absent: Robert Smith, Chair; Rita Goldberg, Vice Chair Staff Present: Mayor Nancy Gardner; Library Director Cynthia Cowell; Library Services Manager Tim Hetherton; Cultural Arts Coordinator Jana Barbier Public Present: Roger Weik 3) Public Comments: Artist Roger Weik introduced himself to the Arts Commission and noted that he had spoken with staff regarding donating one of his paintings to the City of Newport Beach. Mr. Weik noted that his work is shown in over 50 museums in the U.S. and internationally. He had provided information on his background, collections and images of his paintings. 4) Approval of Minutes: It was MSP (Greer/Lasky) to approve the October 11, 2012 Minutes with the following changes: Page 2, second paragraph, add the line “A new master plan committee was established with commissioners Logan, Boller, and Goldberg appointed to the committee”. 5) Current Business: A. Consent Calendar 1. Cultural Arts Activities – Staff provided updated report for Cultural Arts Activities in October and November, 2012. 2. Correspondence and Press – Staff passed around current correspondence. B. Items for Review and Possible Action – 1. Consider Painting Donation from Artist, Roger Weik – Commissioner Boller led a discussion on this item and said that the Fine Arts Committee had reviewed the information provided for a possible donation from the artist. Commissioner Boller noted that the Fine Arts Committee was recommending to the Arts Commission to decline acceptance of Mr. Weik’s artwork at this time. Boller noted that the City has no storage available for donated items and that the Civic Center was not completed yet. It was MSP (Lasky/Greer) to approve the Fine Arts Committee’s recommendation to decline this donation offer. 2. Consider Acceptance of Long-Term Loan of Two Sculptures from Deutsche Bank – Commissioner Boller noted that Robert Smith was chairing the Art in Public Spaces/Historical Preservation Committee, and suggested making a motion to table a discussion on this item. Commissioner Boller passed around photographs of the two sculptures in question and noted that both sculptors were UCI professors. It was MSP (Logan/Greer) to table this item until the next meeting. C. (Monthly Reports – ) 1. Art in Public Spaces/Historical Preservation Committee – None 2. Fine Arts Committee – Commissioner Greer suggested tabling further discussion on the Hilbert exhibition information until the following month. 3. Performing Arts Committee – None 4. Museum Tours – Staff noted that the flyer for the Norton Simon tour was available for the public. 5. Arts Foundation Liaison Committee – Commissioner Greer noted that the Arts Foundation planned to meet on Wednesday November 14 at 6pm and would be discussing the plan for the holiday party, Art in the Park 2013, a field trip to an art gallery, and ways of growing the membership. 6. Publicity Committee – Commissioner Trela shared an article he had found in The Daily Pilot on Cultural Arts Grants being available. 7. Budget Committee – Commissioner Lasky stated that there were no changes to the budget since last month and asked staff if the Cultural Arts Grant expenditures would be reflected in the budget report in December. Staff responded yes. 6) City Arts Commission Announcements or Matters Which Members Would Like Placed on a Future Agenda for Discussion, Action or Report (Non-Discussion Item) – Commissioners requested that the subcommittee “New Master Plan Committee for Visual and Public Art Installations” be included on the following agenda. 7) Public Comments on Non-Agenda Items – None It was MSP (Greer/Lasky) to adjourn the meeting 8) Meeting Adjourned 5:25pm 2
