Convened at 5:04pm
Call to Order and Roll Call:
Commissioners Present: Robyn Grant, Wendy Brooks, Rita Goldberg, Gil Lasky
Chris Trela (arrived at approximately 5:20pm)
Commissioners Absent: Carole Boller, Robert Smith
Staff Present: Jana Barbier, Cultural Arts Coordinator
Public Present: None
Public Comments: Commissioners discussed their time schedule for assisting with
the arts foundation’s upcoming sale.
Approval of Minutes: It was MSP (Brooks/Goldberg) to approve the May 12, 2011
minutes.
Continued Business:
Staff Report /Calendar/Correspondence – Reviewed and filed.
Correspondence/Press – Reviewed and filed.
Committee Updates –
Commissioners Grant and Goldberg stated that they’d attended the last foundation meeting,
that the group had 55 vendors for the June 25 event, and that the foundation would be
borrowing the cultural arts office’s pop-up canopy.
Commissioner Goldberg stated that she wanted to request more rock music for the July 31
concert in the park with Gregg Young and the 2nd Street Band, rather than jazz; staff to
provide contact information for the band to Commissioner Goldberg. Commissioner Goldberg
asked about serving food at cultural arts events. Discussion ensued regarding City permits,
County health permits, special event liability insurance and costs.

Commissioner Goldberg asked if staff would set a date for a public tour to the Norton Simon
Museum. Staff would report back on potential fall dates and museum exhibitions that are
scheduled at the Norton Simon.
Goldberg also asked about using Arts Commission funds to sponsor the City’s July 4 event.
Discussion ensued regarding support and funding for events like parades coordinated by the
City’s Recreation and Senior Services Division.
Commissioner Brooks had no report on the Cultural Arts Grant program. Staff inquired as to
whether this program was going forward as in previous years, and noted that the application
forms would need to be compiled and distributed with appropriate dates after the new fiscal
year begins on July 1, 2011.
Commissioner Grant reported on art in public spaces. She discussed that proposed public art
plans for the new Civic Center were on hold for various reasons.
Grant discussed information she had received regarding plans to install the Irvine Company’s
“Sky Divers” sculpture in a City location. The work had not been accepted formally or stored
by the City yet, and discussions were underway regarding costs and procedural requirements.
Commissioner Brooks noted that she had again discussed architecture with people who were
interested in preserving the Mariners Medical Arts Building.

Future Agenda Items – Discuss Cultural Arts Grants, Elect New Officers in July
Commissioner Announcements – Commissioner Grant announced that this was the last Arts
Commission meeting for Wendy Brooks, and thanked her for her eight years of service.
Commissioners and staff thanked Ms. Brooks for her service.
Adjournment – It was MSP (Grant/Lasky) to adjourn the meeting at 5:30pm.
