TITLE: Cultural Arts Activities for June 2014
The 2014 Newport Beach Art Exhibition was be held at the Newport Beach Civic Center this year on
Saturday, June 14. The one-day juried exhibition, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, featured paintings,
photography, mixed media and sculpture from over 130 artists. The Fine Arts Ad Hoc Subcommittee will
deliver a full report on the event at the August City Arts Commission meeting.
The first of the live musical performances in the Concerts on the Green series was held on June 22 and
featured the Hutchins Consort who performed an eclectic repertoire of classical and popular music
arranged for a string octet. On-site coordination of the event was provided by Librarian II Andrea Jason,
with assistenace from Facilities Maintenance Specialist Eddie Flores.
On June 19th, the City Arts Commission hosted a reception for esteemed artist James Strombotne in the
Central Library Friends Room. Curator Gordon McClelland provided an overview of Mr. Strombotne’s
career, and the artist himself engaged the audience with an interesting question and answer session.
Mr. Strombotne’s art is on display in the Central Library lobby7 until August 1st.
Staff continues to plan a Grand Opening event for the Sculpture Exhibition in the Civic Center Park that
will be held on Saturday, September 13 at 2 PM in the Civic Center Community Room. The Sculpture
Garden Grand Opening is being coordinated by Janis Dinwiddie of Dinwiddie Events.
