HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/11/2014 - City Arts Commission - 05 Staff Report Art Placement ConsultantAgenda Item B.1.
INTRODUCTION:
On August 14th, 2014, the City Arts Commission directed the Fine Arts Ad Hoc Subcommittee to explore
the feasibility of using a consultant to assist in the placement of City art and make a report to the Arts
Commission at the September 11th meeting.
RECCOMENDATION:
The Fine Arts Ad Hoc Subcommittee recommends that the City Arts Commission continue to hire art
placement professionals on an as needed basis.
BACKGROUND:
On occasion, the City Arts Commission requires professional assistance in placing art at sites throughout
the City. These duties were typically completed by the Cultural Arts Coordinator, and are currently
under the purview of the Library Services Director. With little expertise in placing, hanging, or installing
art, the Library Services Director currently uses the services of 2 professional contractors to place art.
For the exhibition of paintings in Central Library, Alan Scott of Fine Art Management has been hired to
hang wall art. For the placement and installation of sculpture, the Cultural Arts Division has hired Dave
Aeppli of Display. Mr. Aeppli managed the installation of sculptures in the Civic Center Park and has
advised on the installation of the Okazaki gift statue. Both Mr. Scott and Mr. Aeppli are paid for their
services through the Professional Services fund from the City Arts Commission budget on an as needed
basis.
