TITLE: Cultural Arts Activities for October 2015
________________________________________________________________________________
Fine Art Exhibitions at Central Library:
Ting Ting Lee’s photography of the
California Missions – featured during
October in the Central Library gallery space
– proved to be popular with the public.
The photos, in addition to being artfully
composed, served as a potent reminder of
California’s past and cultural heritage.
The following artists are scheduled for
exhibitions in the Central Library gallery
space:
November 2015: Joe Lewis
Joe Lewis is a nationally known artist,
arts administrator, educator, and
professor of Art at the University of
California, Irvine. “American Alchemy”
uses cultural iconography and
historical moments: the eagle, the flag,
oil rigs, documents, etc., as
springboards for the audience to re‐
investigate their personal relationships
with the American historical
experience. The work commemorates
the environment, our political system,
and occasionally takes a whimsical
view of our foibles. An Artist’s
Reception is scheduled for Saturday,
November 21, at 1 p.m. in the Central
Library Friends Room.
December 2015/January 2016: Charlotte Lerner
February/March 2016: Joan Irving Brandt
April 2016 – To be determined.
May 2016: Bea Riley
Newport Beach and Antibes, France Jumelage:
In commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Newport Beach and
Antibes, France, a collection of Antibes memorabilia and objets are on display in the Central Librray
lobby display cases. The display was coordinated and designed by Commissioner Caroline Logan with
materials on loan from members of Newport Beach Sister Cities Association.
On October 27, a contingent from Antibes visited Newport Beach. The group toured the Civic Center
complex and Library, and Commissioner Robert Smith and Mrs. Carmen Smith of the Newport Beach
Arts Foundation led a tour of the Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park. At the City Council Study
Session, Mayor Selich read a proclamation commemorating the 25th Anniversary between Sister Cities –
or Jumelages – Antibes and Newport Beach and gifts were exchanged between the two cities.
