TITLE: City Arts Commission Wish List for the Newport Beach Arts Foundation
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Arts Commission approve a list of funding opportunities for submission
to the Newport Beach Arts Foundation.
FUNDING REQUIREMENTS:
No funding requirement.
DISCUSSION:
ARTICLE IX of the Newport Beach Arts Foundation’s Articles of incorporation, “Disposition of Funds”,
stipulates that the Foundation Board of Directors shall request annually from the City of Newport Beach
Arts Commission a statement of funding priorities. In lieu of this request, staff has prepared a list of
funding opportunities for the City Arts Commission to approve for the consideration of the Newport
Beach Arts Foundation.
The City Arts Commission respectfully requests $27,500.00 from the Newport Beach Arts Foundation for
the following list of funding opportunities in order of preference:
• Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park, Phase 3: City Council has requested a proposal for
phase 3 of the Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park that includes an element of private
funding. Staff recommends that the City Arts Commission request that the Newport Beach Arts
Foundation contribute $10,000 towards the overall cost of the project.
• Concert on the Green: Staff recommends that the City Arts Commission request $2,500 that will
be used to help defray the cost of staging a summer concert on the Civic Green.
• Sphere 112: Should the Ivan McLean sculpture, recently re-fabricated from marine grade
stainless steel, demonstrate sufficient durability in the City’s coastal environment, staff
recommends that the Arts Commission request that the Arts Foundation purchase of the piece
for donation to the City. The cost of the piece is $15,000. If the predicted severity of the El Nino
effect proves to be accurate, Sphere 112’s durability should be well established. Like all art
donated to or purchased by the City, the piece must meet the criteria of Council Policies I-9 and
I-11.
If the City Arts Commission approves the funding opportunities, staff recommends that this list should
be submitted to the Newport Beach Arts Foundation at their next scheduled meeting on January 19,
2016, at 6 p.m., in the Staff Conference Room at Central Library.
