An artist’s reception will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2- 5 p.m. in the Friends Meeting Room at the Central Library. The exhibit includes 16 of Eva Malhotra’s works of art in a collection titled What Color the Moon. Born in Mexico, Eva Malhotra studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the California Institute of the Arts under mentor John Baldessari, Her work has evolved through various artistic forms where she intersects disciplines such as painting and sculpting. Malhotra experiments with a variety of techniques to create her art, including carving, scraping, and overlapping, and re-applying remnants of paint that has been carved and/or scraped off. Using wood panels as her base, Malhotra covers the panels with twelve to fifteen layers of differently colored paints. Then she takes printmaking tools--cutters, carvers, gouges, and knives--and makes marks on the surface, creating an imaginative world of color and texture. Her work has been exhibited at various California locations as well as in New York and Mexico City. Upcoming exhibitions at Central Library include:  May 2016: Bea Riley  June 2016/July 2016: Salli Hosseini  August 2016/September 2016: Fernando Del Rosario Joe Lewis to Judge Newport Beach Art Exhibition The City Arts Commission Fine Arts committee is very pleased that Joe Lewis has accepted their invitation to serve as judge for the upcoming 2016 Newport Beach Art Exhibition. Mr. Lewis is a nationally known artist, arts administrator, educator and author. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and he was Chair of the art department at California State University at Northridge from 2004 to 2010. From 1991 to 1995, Mr. Lewis was on the faculty of California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) while also administering a public art program for the City of Los Angeles. Other teaching experiences include teaching at Otis, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon University, and San Francisco Art Institute. Additionally, Mr. Lewis has written for Art in America, The LA Weekly and ArtForum, was a contributing editor for Artspace and a correspondent for Contemporanea, an international arts magazine. He currently is a Professor of Art at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and recently exhibited his art in an exhibit at the Newport Beach Public Library. Sleeping Beauty: On March 19, 200 attendees celebrated spring with a production of the beloved classical ballet, "Sleeping Beauty." This version of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece brings to life the story of a beautiful princess who, at her christening, is bestowed with enchanting gifts by the magical beings of her father’s kingdom. Set to the music of Peter Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty was first performed by the Russian Imperial Ballet in January 1890. The program was presented by Festival Ballet Theatre through a Cultural Arts Grant from the Newport Beach City Arts Commission. Newport Beach Film Festival Seminars: Scheduled for the weekend of April 23 and 24, these seminars are free to the public and made possible by a Cultural Arts Grant from the City Arts Commission.  Seed & Spark Crowdfunding Seminar: Seed & Spark, a crowdfunding organization focusing on independent filmmaking, hosts a seminar on the industry and funding projects on Saturday, April 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Central Library Friends Room.  Virtual Reality Lounge: In the Central Library Friends Room on Saturday April 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.  Getting A Job In the Entertainment Industry: ChopShop, a creative partner who works with brands, networks, agencies and media outlets to create, develop and present stories that stir souls, inspire action and instigate responses, will host a seminar about working in the entertainment industry on April 23 from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. in the Civic Center Community Room.  Youth Seminar: The Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to present an interactive panel that focuses on youth in filmmaking on Saturday, April 23, in the Civic Center Community Room from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m.  Directing Seminar: the Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to present an interactive panel featuring industry professionals discussing the art and business of film directing, on April 23, from 1 to 2 p.m., in the Civic Center Community Room.  Variety’s 10 Cinematographers to Watch: The title says it all, April 23, from 3 to 4 p.m., in the Civic Center Community Room.  Women in Film Panel: The Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to present an interactive panel of women working in the industry today both in front of and behind the camera, in the Civic Center Community Room, on Saturday April 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The Newport Beach Film Festival Industry Expo offers filmmakers an opportunity to engage with companies that can provide the equipment, service and software to help them make their next great film, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday April 24 in the Civic Center Community Room.  Music in Film Seminar: The Newport Beach Film Festival, on Sunday, April 24 at 10 a.m., is proud to present an interactive panel featuring professionals working in the industry discussing music in film, in the Civic Center Community Room.  Screenwriting Seminar: The Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to present an interactive panel of industry professionals discussing screenwriting in the modern filmmaking world on Sunday, April 24, in the Civic Center Community Room from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.  New Media Seminar: With the generous support of the City of Newport Beach Arts Commission, the Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to present an interactive panel discussing new media including gaming, virtual reality and interactive storytelling on Sunday, April 24, in the Civic Center Community Room from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
